Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali Embarks on Visit to Ireland

ALGIERS- President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has embarked on a visit to Ireland leading a significant delegation.
During his three-day visit, which commenced on Wednesday, President Ghali was received by the President of Ireland, Mr. Micheal Higgins. During the meeting, discussions revolved around developments in the Western Sahara issue, as well as future prospects for action, particularly in the field of solidarity, both domestically and on the European and global stage.
Mr. Ghali will also meet with leaders of parties from the government coalition (Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, and the Greens), as well as opposition figures, including Ms. Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Fein, a left-wing nationalist party and the main opposition party. Sinn Fein is expected to lead the next government following the general elections scheduled in Ireland in March 2025.
During the visit, President Ghali will brief various interlocutors on the latest developments regarding the Sahrawi issue both on the ground in Western Sahara and on the international stage, particularly at the United Nations and within the European Union. He will discuss with them ways to enhance solidarity and support from the Irish people and Ireland as a whole for the Sahrawi people. Particularly, he will address the role that Ireland, as an EU member, could play within the community institution in advocating for the rights of the Sahrawi people and promoting their cause.
Additionally, President Ghali will be received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Parliament, where a roundtable discussion is also scheduled with representatives from Irish civil society, trade unions, and media. It is noteworthy that Ireland is a steadfast and determined advocate for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, regardless of the political color of the majority in power in Dublin.
Indeed, the Irish government regularly issues official statements reaffirming this unequivocal support. Within the EU, Ireland stands among the most consistent member states in its defense of the human rights of the Sahrawi people and the preservation of the natural resources of the Western Sahara territory.
This steadfast and courageous stance is rooted in Ireland’s history of resistance against British colonialism. After seven centuries of harsh colonization (1163-1921), the Irish people waged a heroic struggle in the early 20th century against the occupier and led a resistance that ultimately led to their independence following the Treaty of London in 1921.
