ATTsf Honors MLRS for Five Decades of Humanitarian Service and Defense of Dignity in Sahrawi Refugee Camps

Algiers, Algeria | June 1st, 2025 —  The Sahrawi Red Crescent (Media Luna Roja Saharaui – MLRS) has been nominated for the 22nd Navarra International Award for Solidarity, in recognition of its unwavering humanitarian commitment over the past five decades in the Sahrawi refugee camps.

Since its foundation, MLRS has been the principal body managing, coordinating, and delivering humanitarian aid to the Sahrawi refugee population, who have endured 50 years of forced exile. Throughout this half-century, MLRS has distinguished itself not only by its logistical role in ensuring aid reaches the most vulnerable, but also by its firm defense of human dignity and fundamental rights. It has become a cornerstone of Sahrawi survival, resilience, and resistance in the face of protracted displacement and political neglect.

“It is impossible to understand the survival of the Sahrawi people over the past fifty years without acknowledging the indispensable humanitarian commitment of the MLRS during this same period,” stated the Spanish organization Trabajadores y Técnicos sin Fronteras (ATTsf), which officially proposed the nomination.

ATTsf emphasized the symbolic importance of this year’s recognition, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of both the MLRS’s founding and the Sahrawi people’s exile following Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara. The organization sees the award not only as a tribute to past efforts, but also as an urgent call to continue supporting the Sahrawi cause amid ongoing humanitarian and political challenges.

In the Basque version of their statement, ATTsF reiterated that “Saharako Ilargi Erdi Gorriak (MLRS) has spent 50 years managing, coordinating, and distributing humanitarian aid in the Sahrawi refugee camps. It has done so while defending the dignity and basic rights of the people.”

For ATTsF, the MLRS is a deserving recipient of this  international solidarity prize, which highlights global efforts in the defense of human rights, peace, and humanitarian action. The nomination underlines the critical role of grassroots humanitarian institutions like the MLRS in ensuring survival and dignity amid long-term statelessness.

By putting forward this candidacy, ATTsF calls for broader international recognition of the humanitarian crisis in Western Sahara and reaffirms its solidarity with the Sahrawi people’s continued struggle for justice, dignity, and the right to return.
