Saïd Sayoud: “Ministerial Sessions to Oversee the Implementation of the President’s Directive on the Immediate Import of 10,000 Buses”

Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria is moving swiftly to execute President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directive for the immediate import of 10,000 new buses, a decision aimed at rejuvenating the country’s public transport fleet and addressing long-standing structural deficiencies. Minister of Transport, Saïd Sayoud, confirmed on Friday that several high-level sessions have already been convened at the level of the Prime Minister’s office to ensure the meticulous follow-up of this presidential order.
Speaking to Sabq Press on the sidelines of a ministerial roundtable themed “Intra-African Trade: From Vision to Reality” at the International Conference Center, Sayoud revealed that the presidential directive specifically targets the replacement of buses that have been in circulation for over 30 years, as well as a significant portion of those aged between 20 and 30 years.
He stressed that the President has mandated the Ministry of Industry to serve as the principal importer, in close coordination with several other key sectors. These bodies will jointly define the technical specifications, capacity requirements, and categories of buses, ranging from urban and semi-urban fleets to rural, inter-municipal, and inter-wilaya transportation needs.
“The Acting Prime Minister has instructed the establishment of a specialized team tasked with determining the conditions for importation and finalizing a comprehensive tender document within a period not exceeding one week,” Sayoud affirmed.
On another front, the Minister highlighted the active role of the transport sector in the 2025 Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), noting its representation through four major groups: Air Algérie, Gatma, Serport, and the Algerian Ports Authority.
He further disclosed that, beginning tomorrow, Algeria will commence the signing of its first agreements involving the national maritime transport company CNAN, the Gatma Group, and several economic operators. Additional agreements with various stakeholders are also set to follow, underscoring Algeria’s determination to strengthen its role in Africa’s emerging economic landscape.
