Algiers, Algeria | November 11th, 2024 — Algeria’s pharmaceutical giant, Saidal, is launching a series of strategic initiatives aimed at elevating the nation’s drug manufacturing capacity, reducing import dependency, and establishing Algeria as a competitive player in global healthcare markets. President and CEO Wassim Kouidri revealed the company’s ambitious plans during an Algerian radio broadcast, emphasizing Saidal’s commitment to advancing Algeria’s pharmaceutical industry while addressing both domestic and international demands.
A cornerstone of Saidal’s strategy is the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), an area that has long relied on imports. In the province of Batna, Saidal is spearheading two pioneering projects to produce raw materials for essential drugs. One facility will focus on the production of diabetes medication ingredients, while another will manufacture key components for paracetamol and aspirin.
Saidal is also venturing into cancer treatment with a project in Sétif dedicated to producing raw materials for anti-cancer drugs. Additionally, a facility in Médéa is being revitalized to produce antibiotics, a move that strengthens Algeria’s self-sufficiency in vital medications. Kouidri noted Saidal’s ambitious goal of exporting two-thirds of its production, with demand from European and Indian markets anticipated to drive growth.
In a groundbreaking step towards medical innovation, Saidal is investing in advanced cellular therapy, a transformative field expected to revolutionize treatments for various conditions by potentially replacing traditional drug therapies in the coming decade. The company plans to establish a specialized laboratory and hospital facilities to deliver cutting-edge treatments for burns, vitiligo, and other disorders, signaling a significant advancement in Algeria’s medical technology landscape.
Furthermore, Saidal has partnered with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden to bolster expertise in cancer treatment. This strategic collaboration aims to bring advanced cancer therapies to Algeria, with initial clinical trials set for early next year.
