Saidal, Madar Seal Deal to Establish Africa’s First Cellular Therapy Clinic in Algeria

Algiers, Algeria |  Algeria has taken a decisive leap into the future of medical innovation with the signing of an agreement between state-owned pharmaceutical giant Saidal and Madar Holding to establish the continent’s first cellular therapy clinic — a pioneering facility set to position the country at the forefront of cutting-edge biotechnology in Africa and the Middle East.

The accord, signed on Saturday in Algiers at Saidal’s Dar El Beïda headquarters, brought together the President and CEO of Saidal, Nabila Benyaghzar, and the President and CEO of Madar Holding, Amara Charaf Eddine, in the presence of Minister of Industry Sifi Ghrieb, Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry Ouassim Kouidri, and senior executives from both groups. The clinic will be built in Sidi Abdellah, a site earmarked to become a national hub for high-impact biomedical innovation.

Minister Kouidri described the initiative as “a strategic project of immense added value,” emphasising that the venture — undertaken in partnership with world-renowned laboratories — will enable Algeria to join the ranks of pioneering nations in advanced therapies. Leveraging internationally recognised Algerian expertise, the facility will treat complex and life-threatening conditions using advanced stem cell and immune cell technologies. Targeted diseases will include cardiac disorders, haematological and ophthalmological pathologies, neurological conditions, autoimmune diseases, and specific forms of cancer.

Minister Ghrieb, for his part, underscored that the project, personally approved by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reflects the state’s commitment to securing access to the most innovative treatments for Algerian patients and will firmly place the country on the global map of medical biotechnology.

Under the agreement, Madar Holding will assume full financial responsibility for the €65 million investment, while Saidal will contribute its industrial expertise and oversee the transfer of the specialised technology required for the clinic’s launch and operation. The venture builds upon a 2024 collaboration between Saidal, Madar, and the AGERP Scientific Research Centre in Virology, which focused on establishing a microbiology research centre, developing new vaccines, and creating production units for both human and veterinary vaccines.

Minister Kouidri further highlighted that the project will be supported by key national institutions, including the Ministries of Health, Labour and Social Security, Industry, and Pharmaceutical Industry. This coordinated effort underscores Algeria’s determination to modernise its healthcare system, enhance therapeutic sovereignty, and provide its citizens with access to the most advanced medical solutions available worldwide.
