Scorching Heatwave Engulfs Several Algerian Provinces: ONM Issues High-Level Weather Alert

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria braces for an intense and unprecedented heatwave, with the National Office of Meteorology (ONM) sounding the alarm over soaring temperatures set to engulf multiple provinces on Monday and Tuesday. The authority has placed a series of wilayas under orange-level vigilance, warning of “extreme and potentially hazardous” weather conditions.

According to the ONM bulletin, Béjaïa, Sidi Bel Abbès, Tlemcen, Mascara, Relizane, Aïn Defla, and Blida will endure blistering highs ranging between 43°C and 45°C. Meanwhile, in Aïn Témouchent, Oran, Mostaganem, Tipaza, Algiers, and Boumerdès, mercury levels are forecast to fluctuate between 40°C and 42°C, with isolated southern areas of these regions expected to experience peaks of 44°C. This suffocating heatwave, which underscores the intensifying climatic volatility gripping the country, will persist until Tuesday evening.

The ONM further warned of simultaneous meteorological disturbances across southern regions. Heavy downpours accompanied by violent thunderstorms are anticipated in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, and Tamanrasset, compounding the risk of flash floods and severe disruptions. Adding to the complexity of the situation, sweeping sandstorms are expected to reduce visibility and paralyze local mobility across the same desert provinces. Fierce winds of considerable intensity are also forecast for Bordj Badji Mokhtar and In Guezzam, raising concerns of infrastructural damage and heightened risk for travelers and local communities.

Authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant, limit exposure to the scorching sun, and strictly adhere to safety advisories issued by civil protection units and health services. Public health specialists caution that prolonged exposure to such extreme temperatures could trigger heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic medical conditions.
