ALGIERS, March 2nd, 2026 — Mbaba Coura Ndiaye, Senegal’s ambassador to Algeria, emphasized in an exclusive interview with Horizons that Algeria’s experience and know-how are essential for Africa’s development. Ndiaye highlighted the emergence of a new generation of African leaders, assertive and unencumbered by the legacies of colonialism, as a unique opportunity for the continent to assert itself on the global stage.
“The African continent is undergoing profound economic, political, social, and geopolitical transformations,” Ndiaye told Horizons. “For too long marginalized, Africa today presents itself as a strategic space of global importance. If African nations speak with one voice, the continent will be heard and respected internationally.”
On bilateral relations, the ambassador underlined his mission in Algeria as a catalyst for invigorating ties between the two nations. He stressed that practical cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and technology is central to achieving mutual benefits. “We need Algeria’s expertise,” he said. “From energy and gas sector training to industrial know-how, Algeria offers skills that Senegal cannot do without. Technology transfer and collaborative investment are key to harnessing Africa’s potential.”
Ndiaye further pointed to the transformative role of intra-African trade and integration. He cited the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and recent intra-African trade fairs in Algiers as signals of economic progress. “Africa must not only integrate politically but also economically. By leveraging complementary resources across countries, we can reduce dependence on external powers,” he affirmed.
Security and regional stability were also central to Ndiaye’s observations. Drawing from his prior posting in Burkina Faso, he warned that the Sahel remains the epicenter of global terrorism, which is expanding toward coastal nations. “Algeria’s early warnings on cross-border terrorism were vital,” he noted, emphasizing lessons from Algeria’s experience during the ‘Black Decade’ as instructive for all African states.
Highlighting the growing cultural and religious ties between Algeria and Senegal, Ndiaye referenced recent visits by key religious figures, including the global Khalife of the Tidjania, who was received by Senegal’s president and represented Algeria’s leadership. “This underlines the depth of our bilateral relations—not only political and economic but also religious and cultural,” he said.
On practical cooperation, Ndiaye emphasized transport and logistics as foundations for integration. Daily Air Algérie flights, maritime links connecting Dakar and Algiers, and ongoing rail infrastructure projects exemplify this vision. “Algerian products are in high demand in Senegal, and vice versa. By producing locally within Senegal, we gain access to the broader West African market under CEDEAO and UEMOA agreements,” he explained.
Concluding his interview with Horizons, Ndiaye reiterated the strategic importance of Algerian know-how for Senegal and Africa at large. “We must make Africans aware of Africa,” he said. “Collaboration in trade, industry, and skills will enable our continent to truly leverage its immense potential.”
