ALGIERS- The Secretary-General of the Algerian Television Journalists’ Union, Youcef Mehdi, took to Facebook to address what he described as “disparities in performance evaluation and compensation systems for journalists in the public media sector,” alongside his colleagues in their respective institutions.

According to Mehdi, these disparities have led them to lose between 10,000 DZD and 30,000 DZD monthly, depending on each journalist’s rank and seniority.

In numerical terms, the spokesperson revealed that through a simple calculation, it is found that journalists in the public media sector have lost between 1,440,000 DZD to 4,320,000 DZD from their salaries over the past 12 years.

In this context, the Secretary-General of the Algerian Television Journalists’ Union continued: “In short, each journalist could have purchased their own housing with all of this amount, and the strange thing is that until now, the sectoral agreements specific to journalists have not been reviewed despite their unions’ persistent demands for amendments during this timeframe.”

Mehdi concluded: “What is heartbreaking is its actual implementation, which remains elusive… We are frustrated.” The president appeals to the President of the Republic.
