Algiers, Algeria– Sunday, July 13, 2025 | Under the theme “Travel to the heart of Algeria and experience authentic tourism and a millennia-old civilization,” the 24th edition of the International Tourism and Travel Fair (SITEV 2025) opened on Saturday in Algiers with strong national and international presence. The event, which runs from July 12 to 15, features over 200 exhibitors, including representatives from 27 countries and 38 innovative Algerian start-ups, reflecting Algeria’s growing ambition to establish itself as a regional and global tourism hub.

Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Houria Meddahi, presided over the opening ceremony, highlighting the strategic significance of this event as a platform for fostering partnerships, encouraging investment, and exchanging expertise in a sector now recognized as a key pillar of economic diversification.

“This edition of SITEV is marked by qualitative participation, not only from friendly and brotherly countries but also from national institutions, economic partners, tourism and hospitality operators, and Algerian artisans,” stated Meddahi in her keynote address.

Aligned with the strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian government is committed to transforming tourism into a driver of sustainable development. As such, the ministry has launched the 2024–2030 Tourism Action Plan, aimed at unlocking the country’s vast and diverse tourism potential, promoting domestic tourism, and modernizing sectoral infrastructure.

Minister Meddahi detailed the multifaceted approach adopted by her department to trigger a qualitative leap in national tourism, placing special emphasis on investment facilitation, land allocation, and bureaucratic simplification. She revealed that 144 hotel projects are currently underway across the country, with a projected capacity of over 16,000 beds, supported by land parcels made available through the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI).

“These projects are not only expected to boost Algeria’s accommodation capacity, but also to diversify hospitality offerings and stimulate a competitive environment that will enhance service quality and reduce pricing disparities,” she noted.

On the public sector front, 43 state-owned hotels have already undergone major rehabilitation under the Hotel, Tourism and Thermalism Group (HTT). These upgrades will raise the national accommodation capacity to 160,000 beds by the end of 2025, with ambitions to reach 250,000 beds by 2030.

Beyond infrastructure, human capital development remains central to the tourism strategy. The Ministry of Tourism is expanding partnerships with the ministries of Higher Education and Vocational Training to enhance specialized training and widen the network of hospitality and tourism institutes. Digital transformation is also gaining traction, with 20 digital portals operational and 11 additional platforms in development, aimed at bringing services closer to citizens, tourists, and investors alike.

Minister Meddahi also underscored the revival of Saharan tourism, citing growing interest in destinations like Tamanrasset, Illizi, Djanet, Adrar, Béni Abbès, Naâma, and Tindouf. These regions, she emphasized, offer unique experiences rooted in natural wonders and ancient cultural heritage, appealing to travelers in search of authenticity, adventure, and ancestral traditions.

Moreover, she hailed recent measures by Algeria’s high authorities to facilitate visa issuance at borders, which has resulted in over 2.5 million foreign tourists visiting Algeria during the last season—a notable achievement that reflects Algeria’s openness to the world.

Domestically, the minister reported a marked revitalization of internal tourism, particularly through the promotion of coastal, thermal, and cultural tourism, and the valorization of rural and mountainous regions, which aligns with the state’s broader agenda to diversify tourism offerings and regional economic activity.

The opening ceremony of SITEV 2025 took place in the presence of government officials, representatives from national institutions, and international partners, underscoring Algeria’s unwavering commitment to positioning tourism as a cornerstone of its economic transformation.
