Six Arrested in El-Eulma Over Public Defamation and Assault of Woman Falsely Accused of Sorcery

Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 — In a disturbing case of public defamation and moral aggression, six individuals have been arrested in El-Eulma following their involvement in the assault and false accusations against a woman alleged to be practicing sorcery. The incident, which sparked widespread outrage on social media, has now taken a legal turn as the suspects face prosecution for their actions.

According to security services, the investigation was initiated after the victim filed a formal complaint against persons unknown. Algeria’s Cybercrime Unit quickly mobilized and was able to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The individuals were found to have circulated offensive and defamatory content about the woman, falsely portraying her as a witch and subjecting her to social persecution and verbal abuse.

However, further investigation revealed a tragic truth: the woman, who is not proficient in Arabic, was merely reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an in French—her only accessible language of worship. Her actions were misconstrued by those unfamiliar with religious tolerance and basic comprehension, leading to a wave of misinformation and moral lynching.

Law enforcement agencies have condemned the attack as a dangerous example of societal ignorance, worsened by digital harassment and sensationalism. The suspects have been referred to the competent judicial authorities, and charges related to defamation, incitement, and digital violence are being pursued.
