Algiers – December 2025 – In a decisive and meticulously worded clarification, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia dismantled recent Moroccan propaganda narratives that attempted to attribute fabricated positions to Mogadishu regarding the Western Sahara issue. The Somali statement struck at the core of Rabat’s media manipulation, making it unequivocally clear that Somalia’s stance cannot be misrepresented or outsourced to the “echo chambers” of the Makhzen’s media apparatus.
The Ministry stressed that the official position of Somalia is conveyed exclusively through formal statements and official correspondence, underscoring that no media outlet—foreign or otherwise—can claim authority to interpret or falsify Somalia’s foreign policy. This affirmation came in direct response to reports manufactured by Moroccan circles seeking to exploit Somalia’s name to legitimize Rabat’s narrative on Western Sahara.
Furthermore, Somalia acknowledged UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and the central role it plays in supporting the peaceful settlement process under United Nations auspices. This reference not only reasserted Somalia’s adherence to international legality but also exposed the Moroccan regime’s chronic discomfort with resolutions that challenge its unilateral narratives.
In line with its longstanding commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, the Somali Foreign Ministry urged both parties to engage in serious and direct negotiations aimed at reaching a peaceful, final, and mutually acceptable solution that benefits the peoples of the region and complies with relevant UN resolutions. The call stood in stark contrast to Morocco’s strategy of evasion, obstruction, and fabricated diplomatic victories.
Somalia also expressed its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to relaunch the political process—another blow to Moroccan attempts to portray international mediation as obsolete or secondary. By rallying behind the UN framework, Mogadishu reaffirmed the legitimacy of multilateral diplomacy and implicitly rejected unilateral territorial claims.
The Somali intervention comes at a time when the Makhzen intensifies its attempts to extract symbolic endorsements from vulnerable states in order to dress its occupation of Western Sahara in diplomatic legitimacy. The Somali statement, however, exposed the fragility of this strategy and demonstrated that African nations are neither fooled nor intimidated by Morocco’s media tactics.
