Sonarem–SONEMIC Agreement Sets Framework for Structured Mining Cooperation and Capacity Development

Algeria’s state-owned mining group Sonarem has formalized a new phase of bilateral engagement with Chad through the signing of a protocol of agreement with the Chadian company SONEMIC, establishing a structured framework for cooperation in geological research, mineral exploration, and mining development.
The agreement, signed at Sonarem’s headquarters under the supervision of its Chief Executive Officer, Reda Belhadj, and in the presence of SONEMIC’s Deputy Director General, Nasser Taha Abdeldjelil, reflects a coordinated effort to deepen operational collaboration between the two entities. The ceremony brought together senior executives and technical representatives from both sides, underscoring the institutional dimension of the partnership.
At its core, the protocol defines the mechanisms and conditions governing cooperation, with the stated objective of enhancing the efficiency of joint work and ensuring the effective implementation of agreed priorities. The framework encompasses several key areas, including the advancement of geological research, the expansion of mineral exploration activities, and the exchange of technologies and expertise in the field of sustainable mining.
A central component of the agreement lies in its emphasis on human capital development. Both parties committed to strengthening workforce capabilities through targeted training initiatives and knowledge transfer mechanisms. In this regard, parallel discussions addressed additional projects, including a prospective agreement dedicated to the transfer of expertise and technical competencies aimed at supporting the development of Chad’s mining sector. Another initiative under consideration focuses on the training of trainers, with the objective of improving the qualifications of managerial and operational personnel within the industry.
The protocol also provides for the launch of joint structuring projects, signaling an intention to move beyond dialogue toward concrete operational outcomes. This approach reflects a shared understanding that long-term cooperation in the extractive sector requires both technical alignment and institutional coordination.
Equally notable is the reaffirmation by both parties of their commitment to principles of good governance, transparency, and adherence to environmental standards throughout all stages of mining activity. Through this agreement, Sonarem and SONEMIC articulate a common ambition to strengthen the contribution of the mining sector to economic diversification, enhance the attractiveness of investment, and anchor their cooperation within a broader South–South dynamic.
