Algiers, Algeria– Friday, July 18, 2025 | In a landmark step towards strengthening Algeria’s water security infrastructure, the national oil and gas group Sonatrach announced Friday evening that the Tighremt seawater desalination plant, located in the municipality of Toudja, Bejaia Province, has officially reached a daily production capacity of 120,000 cubic meters. This achievement marks a pivotal stage in the plant’s gradual integration into full operational production, a process that aligns with Algeria’s complementary national program to bolster water security.

This initial operational threshold was achieved in strict accordance with the established schedule and in full compliance with the protocol agreed upon between the Algerian Energy Company (AEC)—a subsidiary of Sonatrach—and the Algerian Water Authority (ADE). The successful commissioning reflects a strategic and methodical approach to scaling up production capacity in response to pressing national water needs.

The plant is expected to undergo two additional capacity upgrades in the coming days. The first will elevate its output to 150,000 cubic meters per day, followed shortly thereafter by a second expansion phase targeting 180,000 cubic meters per day. These progressive increases are designed to ensure operational stability, technical reliability, and sustainable integration into the national water distribution network.

Upon reaching its ultimate capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, the Bejaia desalination plant will become one of the cornerstones of Algeria’s water infrastructure, with the ability to secure potable water supply for nearly 3 million people. It is one of the flagship facilities under the first wave of the complementary national desalination initiative, aimed at alleviating water stress across the country amid growing environmental challenges and demographic pressures.

Through this ambitious infrastructure, Sonatrach reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting Algeria’s national priorities in water security, sustainable development, and resilience-building in the face of climate-related water scarcity.
