Algiers, Algeria | January 08th, 2025 — Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, has declared that Algeria has successfully met the challenge of seawater desalination, marking a significant achievement in the country’s efforts to ensure water security. During his visit to El-Tarf, Hachichi highlighted the completion of five desalination plants located in El-Tarf, Béjaïa, Boumerdès, Tipasa, and Oran, which are poised to provide a sustainable solution for the country’s growing water demands.
“These desalination plants, built within exceptionally short timelines, not only comply with international standards but also feature 100% Algerian expertise,” Hachichi emphasized. These stations are a direct response to the increasing need for freshwater, and their swift completion showcases the country’s ability to address critical infrastructure challenges with national capabilities.
The Koudiet Eddraouche desalination plant, a key facility in the project, is expected to significantly impact the region by meeting the water needs of nearly 3 million people across Annaba, El-Tarf, Guelma, and Skikda. Hachichi, who visited the plant several months ago, confirmed the plant’s readiness, underscoring its strategic importance in enhancing the region’s water supply.
“I am here today to confirm and announce that the Koudiet Eddraouche plant will be connected to the national power grid by December 31, 2024,” stated Hachichi. The CEO also revealed that initial technical trials, a crucial step before water distribution begins, were successfully carried out on January 1, 2025. He expressed pride in the team’s efforts, calling these milestones a testament to the dedication and competence involved in the project.
The desalinated water production will begin with an initial delivery of 60,000 cubic meters on February 7, 2025, with Hachichi assuring that all five desalination plants will be fully operational before the onset of Ramadan in 2025. The progress of the other stations, he noted, is on track, with construction and technical tests expected to be completed by the end of January 2025.
In his closing remarks, Hachichi thanked the key stakeholders, particularly the Governors of El-Tarf and Annaba, for their support and contributions to the successful implementation of this vital project.
Following his visit to El-Tarf, Hachichi proceeded to Annaba, where he toured Fertial, a leading company in phosphate fertilizer production, further underscoring Algeria’s commitment to advancing its industrial and environmental sectors.
