Strategic facility set to supply 300,000 m³ of potable water daily to Béjaïa and neighboring provinces, reinforcing Algeria’s national water security

Algiers, Algeria | May 20th, 2025 — The Chairman and CEO of Sonatrach, Rachid Hachichi, conducted a field visit to the seawater desalination plant project in Tighremt, located in the municipality of Toudja, in the wilaya of Béjaïa, accompanied by the Governor of Béjaïa, Kamel-Eddine Karbouche, and several senior executives of the Sonatrach Group.

This on-site inspection allowed the CEO to assess the notable progress of this vital infrastructure project, which has benefited from a 24-hour continuous work rotation system, implemented in line with directives from Algeria’s highest authorities.

In a statement, Sonatrach recalled that the Tighremt construction site had been severely affected by extreme weather conditions that struck on March 30 and 31, 2025. The event, classified as a storm under the Beaufort scale, constituted a force majeure, with violent northwesterly winds and waves reaching up to 7 meters. These conditions caused significant mechanical damage to both permanent installations and temporary offshore structures.

In response to this exceptional situation, Sonatrach immediately mobilized a coordinated response among its involved subsidiaries, accelerating the resumption of work. The project has now entered its final stages, with ongoing operations including landscaping, pipework cleaning, and technical equipment testing, all in preparation for the plant’s commissioning.

Upon entry into service, the Tighremt desalination plant will have a daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters of potable water. It is expected to meet the water needs of Béjaïa and the neighboring wilayas of Sétif, Bouira, and Bordj Bou Arréridj. Moreover, the plant will enable the reallocation of water resources from the Tichy-Haf and Lakhad dams toward agricultural zones in the Soummam Valley and the Asnam Plain.

This major infrastructure project forms part of the complementary development program launched by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at sustainably strengthening Algeria’s water security, particularly in the face of increasing climate-related challenges and demographic growth.
