Algiers, Algeria | January 08th, 2025 — Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to spearheading Algeria’s industrial transformation by focusing on the development of a leading fertilizer and chemical industry aimed at bolstering the country’s food security. During his visit to the Fertial complex in Annaba, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sonatrach under the Asmidal Group, Hachichi outlined the company’s strategic roadmap to modernize and expand its petrochemical operations.
Sonatrach’s ambitions to develop a robust fertilizer and chemical sector are part of the broader national effort to enhance Algeria’s agricultural productivity and ensure a stable food supply. “Sonatrach is fully supporting Asmidal’s development plans and its subsidiaries, which are crucial to strengthening Algeria’s food security by advancing the fertilizer and chemical industry,” Hachichi stated.
As part of this modernization drive, Hachichi inspected the ongoing project to renew the main ammonia furnace at the Fertial complex, a vital step that will increase production capacity while adhering to the highest safety and industrial security standards. This modernization aligns with the broader objective of increasing Algeria’s self-sufficiency in essential agricultural inputs and supporting the nation’s sustainable development goals.
In addition to his visit to the Fertial complex, Hachichi also traveled to the El-Tarf region to inspect the Koudiet Eddraouche desalination plant. On January 1, 2025, the plant began its preliminary water flow trials as part of the first phase of technical testing in preparation for delivering desalinated drinking water to 3 million residents across the El-Tarf, Annaba, Guelma, and Skikda regions. The plant is expected to begin full production of potable water by February 7, 2025, marking another major milestone in Algeria’s efforts to address its water security challenges.
The Koudiet Eddraouche plant is a key component of Algeria’s national water security program, initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The program includes the construction of five seawater desalination plants with a total daily production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per plant. These stations are slated for completion by early 2025 and represent a significant step toward the country’s goal of meeting 60% of its drinking water needs through desalination by 2030.
Hachichi expressed pride in the hard work and dedication of the employees from the Algerian Energy Company, the Algerian Industrial Projects Company, and the Algerian Pipeline Company, who have worked tirelessly to complete the Koudiet Eddraouche plant ahead of schedule. He praised their contributions to the success of this vital project, which will provide reliable access to clean water for millions of Algerians.
