Sonatrach Launches Full-Scale Production at “Cap Djinet 2” Desalination Plant, Marking a Strategic Milestone in Algeria’s Water Security

Algiers – October 2025 – Sonatrach has officially announced that the “Cap Djinet 2” seawater desalination plant, located in Boumerdès, has entered full production, delivering its maximum operational capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day—equivalent to 300 million liters of potable water daily. This achievement places the facility among Algeria’s strategic infrastructures dedicated to securing sustainable access to water resources.
The milestone follows a rigorous technical and experimental process initiated after the plant’s official inauguration on March 11, 2025, by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The post-launch phase involved extensive mechanical and technical testing, along with stringent quality control measures, ensuring full compliance with the highest international standards of efficiency, safety, and reliability.
By bringing this facility into full operation, Sonatrach—through its subsidiary, the Algerian Energy Company—has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to executing the First Complementary National Program for Water Security. The rapid completion of this project reflects Algeria’s resolute determination to address the growing challenges posed by water scarcity, while simultaneously consolidating the nation’s strategic autonomy.
The plant also exemplifies the success of Algeria’s national approach in mobilizing domestic expertise. The National Company for Major Petroleum Works, a Sonatrach subsidiary, executed the project from the initial engineering design phase to full commissioning, once again underscoring Algeria’s ability to deliver mega-projects that meet global benchmarks.
