Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria’s state-owned energy giant Sonatrach has formally confirmed that it has completed its exploration commitments in Libya for the current phase, notably through the drilling of two additional wells, as detailed during an expanded technical meeting convened on Monday in Tripoli by the National Oil Corporation (NOC).
According to the Libyan News Agency (LANA), the meeting was part of the NOC’s annual series of technical consultations with foreign companies operating in partnership with the Libyan sector. Held at the NOC headquarters, the session brought together the Corporation’s Exploration Department, Sonatrach’s General Manager and his deputy, along with a joint team of specialists and technical experts. Representatives of Indian partner companies also took part through videoconference.
Discussions centered on the work achieved by Sonatrach throughout 2025, including progress on re-entering the A1-96/2 exploration well, a crucial phase in the ongoing assessment of hydrocarbon potential in the region. Sonatrach provided an update on its operational roadmap, especially its intention to drill four appraisal wells across Contract Areas 95/1 and 96/1—blocks regarded as strategic within the bilateral cooperation framework.
During the meeting, Sonatrach reaffirmed that it had met its exploration obligations in full, most notably by drilling two supplementary wells required under its current contractual commitments. This confirmation underscores the company’s continued engagement in Libya’s upstream sector and its respect for agreed-upon timelines and responsibilities.
