Sonatrach Reports 20% Surge in Net Profit for 2024 Amid Global Energy Downturn

Algiers – December 2025 – Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned energy giant, closed the 2024 financial year with a robust net profit of 812 billion dinars—approximately six billion dollars—marking a solid 20 percent increase compared to 2023. The financial disclosure, included in the company’s annual report, illustrates the group’s capacity to consolidate earnings even as it navigated a markedly less favorable global energy climate.
According to the report published on the group’s website, Sonatrach maintained stability in primary hydrocarbon production, recording 193.7 million tons of oil equivalent (MTEP) in 2024. This level remains virtually unchanged from the 193.8 MTEP achieved in 2023, and significantly higher than the 189.6 MTEP posted in 2022. The company noted that 2024 unfolded under more challenging market conditions, defined primarily by declining global oil and gas prices when compared to the previous year.
Notwithstanding this downturn, Sonatrach highlighted “numerous performance achievements,” most notably a record production of domestic fuels. In 2024, diesel output reached 10.8 million tons, while gasoline production amounted to 3.7 million tons, reaffirming the company’s strategic focus on energy supply and industrial performance.
Capital expenditure rose substantially, with total investments reaching 835 billion dinars—about six billion dollars—reflecting an 11 percent increase year-on-year. Importantly, 79 percent of this investment was directed toward exploration and production activities, demonstrating Sonatrach’s determination to sustain long-term resource development in spite of turbulent market conditions.
The petrochemical segment also posted notable results. The group reported “appreciable performances” across its complexes, including a remarkable 101 percent increase in PEHD output at the CP2K complex in Skikda. Additionally, crude oil processing rose by two percent, with annual throughput amounting to 26.5 million tons.
The financial statement underscores the company’s resilience and adaptive strength, emphasizing that, despite a generalized contraction in global energy markets, Sonatrach remained aligned with its strategic development plan. The group continued to implement investment commitments with determination, mitigating external pressures while pursuing operational efficiency.
Exports drove significant revenue streams, with export turnover reaching 6.019 trillion dinars (45 billion dollars) in 2024. Meanwhile, overall revenue amounted to 6.523 trillion dinars, marking a decline of 10 percent. The downturn reflects the repercussions of weaker market prices, despite stable production levels.
The company also contributed significantly to national finances, paying 3.872 trillion dinars in petroleum taxes over the course of 2024, according to the annual report.
Against a backdrop of declining global demand and volatile commodity prices, the performance achieved by Sonatrach in 2024 reveals a corporate posture characterized by strategic perseverance, operational robustness, and an uncompromising orientation toward long-term energy sovereignty.
