Sonatrach Strikes Major Oil Discovery in Libya’s Ghadamès Basin, Boosting Regional Energy Prospects

Algiers, Algeria |  Sonatrach, Algeria’s state-owned energy giant, has achieved a significant petroleum discovery in Libya’s Ghadamès Basin, near the country’s western border—a strategic find set to yield an estimated 4,200 barrels of crude per day. The announcement, made Tuesday by Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC), marks a pivotal advancement in the two countries’ energy cooperation and promises to bolster North Africa’s standing in the global oil market.

According to the NOC, the breakthrough stems from the commercial discovery of well A-65/2, a project undertaken by Sonatrach’s subsidiary SIPEX. Drilling operations, supported by state-of-the-art integrated project management (IPM) techniques, will expand further with the commencement of three additional wells, leveraging both Libyan and international technical expertise.

This achievement is the continuation of Sonatrach’s long-term operations in Libya, dating back to its 2008 exploration and production license in the basin. After years of political and security instability forced the suspension of activities, Sonatrach officially resumed operations in November 2023.

NOC officials emphasized that the new production capacity will play a critical role in increasing Libya’s oil and gas reserves, strengthening national energy security, and supporting regional economic stability. The swift move toward exploitation underscores both nations’ determination to maximize their hydrocarbon potential and solidify their influence in an increasingly competitive energy landscape.
