Sonatrach Unveils a $60 Billion Investment Plan to Drive Algeria’s Energy Transformation

Algiers – October 2025 – At the 13th edition of the North Africa & Mediterranean Petroleum and Hydrogen Exhibition & Conference (NAPEC 2025), Sonatrach’s President and CEO, Rachid Hachichi, announced an ambitious $60 billion investment plan spanning the next five years — a landmark initiative set to modernize the company’s infrastructure, enhance national production capacity, and accelerate Algeria’s energy diversification.
A Visionary Program Anchored in Modernization and Technological Renewal
This massive strategic plan, described by Hachichi as “an essential roadmap for the future of Algeria’s energy sovereignty,” will focus on key priorities, including the exploration and development of new hydrocarbon fields, the modernization of existing facilities, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies across all production chains. A significant portion of the investment will be dedicated to renewable energy, green hydrogen, and carbon footprint reduction initiatives, reflecting Sonatrach’s commitment to a sustainable and forward-looking energy transition.
“We must invest today to ensure the country’s energy security while preparing Sonatrach to meet the challenges of the global energy transition,” Hachichi affirmed, emphasizing that innovation, technology transfer, and environmental responsibility will form the cornerstone of the group’s strategy.
Expanding Global Partnerships and Strategic Cooperation
Beyond national borders, Sonatrach aims to reinforce its international footprint through a new wave of strategic partnerships. One of the flagship initiatives under this plan is SoutH2 — a joint project with several European partners aimed at producing and exporting Algerian green hydrogen to European markets. This endeavor not only underscores Algeria’s growing role in the global energy transition but also positions the country as a pivotal supplier in ensuring continental energy stability.
Hachichi highlighted that Sonatrach’s international strategy is designed to diversify revenue sources, attract foreign investment, and consolidate Algeria’s standing as a leading and reliable energy actor in Africa and the Mediterranean basin.

The $60 billion plan is also expected to have a transformative impact on Algeria’s domestic economy. According to Hachichi, the initiative will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, bolster the local subcontracting network, and invigorate the national industrial fabric. “This is not merely an investment in energy infrastructure,” he noted, “but an investment in Algeria’s human capital, innovation, and long-term prosperity.”
This bold strategy aligns closely with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s national vision, which places energy transition, industrial modernization, and economic diversification at the core of Algeria’s development agenda.
