Sonelgaz Boosts Summer Readiness with Major Energy Projects Across Algeria

Algiers, Algeria | June 2nd, 2025 —  As Algeria approaches the high-demand summer season of 2025, Sonelgaz has completed an ambitious and wide-reaching energy preparedness plan, reinforcing its commitment to delivering secure, uninterrupted electricity and gas services across the country. The company announced a comprehensive set of projects aimed at increasing production capacity, modernizing infrastructure, and protecting critical networks from natural disasters.

According to an official statement released by the energy group, Sonelgaz successfully increased the national electricity production capacity by 1,172 megawatts, bringing the total available installed capacity during the summer to 27,333 megawatts. This critical reinforcement ensures the country is well-equipped to handle the seasonal spike in energy consumption.

Key developments have taken place in the electricity transmission sector through Sonelgaz’s subsidiary, Sonelgaz-Transmission of Electricity. The company has completed the construction of 30 electrical transformer substations operating at 220/400 kV and 220/60 kV, alongside the commissioning of 6 high-voltage stations and 2 mobile substations. In parallel, 945 kilometers of new transmission lines have been deployed to strengthen the national grid’s reliability.

On the distribution front, Sonelgaz-Electricity and Gas Distribution executed an expansive operational plan resulting in 2,115 kilometers of newly built distribution networks. Additionally, 622 substations for both low and medium voltage levels were installed, ensuring the secure and efficient delivery of energy to end users.

Sonelgaz also undertook a nationwide effort to rehabilitate power generation and distribution infrastructure. This included a preventative maintenance program targeting network resilience in all 58 wilayas (provinces), underscoring the company’s commitment to continuous service during periods of high consumption.

Beyond technical upgrades, the company actively supported wildfire prevention efforts—an increasingly critical concern in recent years. Through proactive collaboration with local authorities, Sonelgaz established 870 protective trenches covering a total length of 486 kilometers in forested and vulnerable zones to safeguard infrastructure from fire-related risks.

Reaffirming its dedication, Sonelgaz stated it will continue to mobilize all human and material resources to deliver secure and efficient energy services. The company emphasized its resolve to meet citizens’ expectations and ensure consistent power supply under optimal conditions throughout the summer peak.
