Sonelgaz Launches Ambitious Solar Project to Power Gara Djebilet Mine

ALGIERS- Sonelgaz, the Algerian utility company, has officially announced the initiation of a significant project to establish a photovoltaic solar power plant near the Gara Djebilet iron mine in the Tindouf province. The ambitious venture, designed with a production capacity of 200 megawatts, aims to provide electricity to the Gara Djebilet mine and its surrounding regions.

The spokesperson for Sonelgaz, in a statement to the national television, highlighted that this solar project aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives and underscores the nation’s commitment to energy transition policies. The focus on developing renewable energy sources and diversifying the energy matrix is a key aspect of Algeria’s strategic vision.

“In adherence to the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and as a realization of the policy for energy transition aimed at developing renewable energies and diversifying energy sources, Sonelgaz’s services have initiated the project for the construction of a photovoltaic solar power plant with a production capacity of 200 megawatts in Tindouf,” stated the spokesperson.

The proposed solar facility, strategically located in proximity to the Gara Djebilet mine installations, will incorporate an energy storage system. The spokesperson confirmed that the official tender for the project would be announced before the end of the current year, facilitating the commencement of construction in the first quarter of 2024.

Addressing the timeline for completion, the Sonelgaz representative outlined that the project is anticipated to be finalized within a timeframe ranging between 18 to 24 months. In addition to supplying electricity to the mine facilities, the solar plant will be integrated into the Tindouf electricity grid.
