Algiers, Algeria | December 4th, 2024 — In a powerful show of solidarity and commitment to international peace and justice, Presidents Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria have called for enhanced support for the Western Sahara cause and a ceasefire in Gaza. The two leaders, meeting during the 11th Binational Commission (BNC) session in Cape Town on Tuesday, emphasized the urgency of addressing critical issues impacting global stability, notably the prolonged atrocities in Gaza and the ongoing struggle for self-determination in Western Sahara.
In their joint communiqué, the South African and Nigerian leaders reiterated their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, freedom, and justice, urging the international community to intensify its efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict in accordance with international law. The leaders underscored the importance of upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the region, stressing that a lasting solution can only be achieved through genuine dialogue and respect for the people’s right to choose their own destiny.
Gaza: A Call for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Access
The two presidents also addressed the catastrophic situation in Gaza, where ongoing violence has claimed countless lives and displaced thousands of civilians. Ramaphosa and Tinubu jointly called for an immediate ceasefire and increased humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. They reaffirmed their belief that the only sustainable resolution to the Zionist-Palestinian conflict lies in the establishment of a two-state solution, based on the principles of peace, justice, and mutual recognition.
In a moment of shared international diplomacy, Nigeria praised South Africa’s pivotal role in bringing the case of Palestine and Zionist actions before the International Court of Justice, underscoring the need for accountability in international relations. Both nations have been vocal proponents of reforming the United Nations Security Council to create a more responsive global governance system that respects and promotes universal human rights.
Strengthening Cooperation Between South Africa and Nigeria
The 11th BNC session, which also marks the 30th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between South Africa and Nigeria, was a testament to the deep and enduring brotherly ties between the two nations. Ramaphosa and Tinubu reiterated the importance of their bilateral cooperation in tackling regional and global challenges. The two leaders stressed the need for greater collaboration in addressing poverty and ensuring peace in Africa, with a particular focus on the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
As part of this vision, the two heads of state expressed grave concern over the ongoing crisis in Sudan, which has led to widespread destruction and a humanitarian catastrophe. The devastating effects of the conflict in Sudan were underscored by the need for urgent international intervention to halt the violence and begin the process of rebuilding.
This joint declaration by the two African giants is a resounding call to the international community to act swiftly and decisively in the face of ongoing conflicts, urging a unified global effort to promote peace, justice, and human rights across all corners of the world.
