Algiers, Algeria | December 6th, 2024 — South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Parks Tau, delivered a compelling address on Thursday, underscoring Algeria’s dynamic and robust economy as a gateway for significant investment opportunities across various sectors. This statement was made during the opening of the Algeria-South Africa Economic Forum, an event aimed at deepening the economic ties and collaborative ventures between the two nations.

In his speech, Minister Tau highlighted that Algeria stands as the third-largest economy in Africa, a position that grants South African businesses unprecedented access to a rapidly growing market with vast potential. He noted that the size and vitality of Algeria’s economy present a powerful incentive for South African companies to consider entering the market and exploring investment avenues.

“Algeria offers substantial opportunities for growth and expansion in a variety of sectors,” said Tau, reinforcing the importance of strategic partnerships. “The strong economic position of Algeria, coupled with its role as a leading player in the African market, creates an ideal environment for businesses looking to enhance their regional footprint.”

The Minister also emphasized the strategic nature of the relationship between Algeria and South Africa, underscoring the mutual benefits that both nations stand to gain from enhanced economic cooperation. “Our collaboration could significantly boost trade between our countries, while also fostering cooperation in vital sectors such as industry, infrastructure development, and the digital economy,” Tau added.

The Economic Forum, which kicked off on Thursday evening in Algiers, has been organized under the theme “Towards a Permanent and Productive Partnership.” The forum, co-chaired by Algeria’s Minister of External Trade and Export Promotion, Mohamed Bukhari, and Minister Tau, aims to serve as a platform for exploring avenues for greater economic integration, strategic partnerships, and joint investment initiatives.

The event is seen as a crucial step towards solidifying Algeria and South Africa’s growing ties, positioning both nations as key players in African economic development. With discussions centered on industrial collaboration, infrastructure projects, and the expansion of digital economies, the forum promises to provide a comprehensive outlook on how both countries can leverage their strengths for mutual growth and prosperity.

The continued strengthening of trade relations and investment activities between Algeria and South Africa aligns with both countries’ broader objectives to diversify their economies and increase their participation in the global market. As the forum progresses, the momentum of this partnership is expected to translate into concrete investments and long-term economic collaborations between the two nations.

Algiers and Pretoria: A United Front for Justice and Progress

A Legacy of Struggle and Shared Vision

The relationship between Algeria and South Africa is deeply interwoven with Africa’s liberation history. Algeria’s unequivocal support for the South African people during their fight against apartheid left an indelible mark on their bilateral ties. This alliance was personified by Nelson Mandela, who received military training in Algeria during the early years of the anti-apartheid struggle, solidifying the bond between the two nations.

Despite geographical distance, Algeria and South Africa have consistently stood at the forefront of Africa’s collective battles, championing the principles of freedom and human dignity. Today, this legacy continues through their unified stances on pressing global issues, including the Palestinian cause and Western Sahara, where both nations persistently advocate for justice and sovereignty.

Champions of Justice and the Palestinian Cause

In diplomatic arenas and international courts, Algiers and Pretoria have demonstrated a robust commitment to justice. Algeria, leveraging its current seat on the UN Security Council, has tirelessly defended the Palestinian cause, condemning the brutal actions of the Zionist entity in Gaza since October 2023. Similarly, South Africa has been a vocal critic on global platforms, exposing the humanitarian crises and atrocities inflicted upon the Palestinian people.

The unprecedented decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity was significantly propelled by the collaborative efforts of Algeria and South Africa. Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune initiated this pursuit of accountability, calling for international legal action, a call that Pretoria amplified by mobilizing proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Together, the two nations have elevated the Palestinian cause on the global stage, achieving progress in a climate often marred by international inertia.

A Unified Stand on Western Sahara

Western Sahara, Africa’s last colony, remains another focal point of convergence for Algeria and South Africa. Both nations have consistently upheld the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, vehemently opposing Morocco’s occupation. Algeria advocates for a referendum under the auspices of the United Nations, while South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated his country’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). In October 2022, during a visit by Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali to Pretoria, Ramaphosa described the Sahrawi struggle as “noble and honorable,” reaffirming South Africa’s principled stance.

Shared Aspirations for Africa’s Future

Beyond these critical issues, Algiers and Pretoria share a common vision for addressing Africa’s broader challenges, including security, peace, and economic integration. Both nations advocate for African unity and sustainable development, championing initiatives that promote regional cooperation and the continent’s autonomy on the global stage.

The two countries also align on global governance reforms, seeking a more inclusive and equitable international system. Their partnership reflects their collective aspiration for an Africa that is free from oppression and fully capable of determining its own destiny.

A Symbol of Enduring Friendship

President Ramaphosa’s visit to Algeria will not only reaffirm the historic bonds between the two nations but also celebrate their shared values and aspirations. A highlight of the visit will be his address to the Algerian Parliament, a rare honor reflecting the depth of the relationship between Algiers and Pretoria.

As Algeria and South Africa unite once again to champion justice, sovereignty, and African solidarity, their partnership serves as a beacon of hope for the continent and a testament to the enduring power of shared struggles and common ideals. The visit is poised to further cement this alliance, reinforcing a legacy of friendship and a shared commitment to shaping a just and equitable world order.
