Spanish Hired Media Writing to Morocco’s Tune: The ‘Nacer El-Djinn’ Hoax Exposes a Dirty and Orchestrated Campaign Against Algeria

Algiers – September 2025 – Once again, the mask has fallen from certain Western outlets that no longer operate as professional newsrooms but rather as cheap megaphones for Morocco’s intelligence apparatus. The Spanish daily El Confidencial has recently published an outlandish fabrication claiming that General Abdelkader Haddad, known as “Nacer El-Djinn,” had fled Algeria illegally to seek refuge in Spain. This baseless fantasy, devoid of a single shred of evidence, was conveniently scripted by Morocco’s palace narrative and shamelessly penned by Ignacio Cembrero, a journalist notorious for toeing the Moroccan line.
The reality is indisputable: Abdelkader Haddad never left Algerian soil. What was disseminated was nothing more than a calculated and dirty fabrication, designed to tarnish Algeria’s image, undermine the credibility of its security institutions, and propagate the illusion of internal divisions. It is yet another episode in Morocco’s recurring tactic of manufacturing lies whenever it fails to confront Algeria’s political weight and steadfast principles.
What is even more alarming is the attempt to weaponize these fabrications against Spain’s own government. By circulating such falsehoods, these Moroccan-backed media platforms sought to pressure Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and manipulate Spanish public opinion. This is not journalism; it is blackmail masquerading as reporting—an insidious strategy reflecting Morocco’s reliance on disinformation, coercion, and political extortion against its neighbors.
The disgrace deepened when Le Monde, a French outlet long regarded as a global reference, fell into the same trap. Rather than exposing the hoax, it reproduced the narrative of El Confidencial and indulged in fabrications about “factional struggles” in Algeria. This episode exposes a harsh truth: even established Western outlets can act as unwitting vehicles for Morocco’s disinformation campaigns, thereby eroding their credibility and journalistic integrity.
The smear campaign did not remain confined to written press. It metastasized across social media, amplified by digital troll farms and so-called “opposition voices” in Europe—many of them openly subsidized. Their singular aim: to portray Algeria as weak, fractured, and unstable. Yet, in reality, these cheap tactics only strengthen Algeria’s unity and reaffirm its determination to expose Morocco’s schemes.
This is no longer a case of journalistic missteps or professional negligence. It is a coordinated media war against Algeria—engineered in Rabat and executed through compliant Western platforms. The truth, however, remains unassailable: Algeria stands firm, backed by resilient institutions, unwavering in its foreign policy, and faithful to its historic commitment to peoples’ rights, foremost the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
