Spanish Media: Morocco on the Brink of an Arab Spring as Youth Revolt Against the Makhzen
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – October 2025 – The influential Spanish daily El Confidencial has drawn a sharp parallel between the current wave of unrest sweeping Morocco and the uprisings of the Arab Spring, underscoring a widening gulf between the Moroccan people and the entrenched Makhzen system. According to the newspaper, thousands of young Moroccans poured into the streets of Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, Meknes, and other major cities, carrying banners and chanting slogans that distilled years of frustration: “We want more hospitals and fewer stadiums.”
The protests, described as massive and spontaneous, erupted across the country through social media mobilization, reflecting the profound social discontent simmering among Moroccan youth. The demonstrators are demanding a redirection of the billions earmarked for the 2030 FIFA World Cup toward critical sectors such as health and education—seen by citizens as existential priorities rather than luxury projects designed to polish Morocco’s international image.
El Confidencial highlighted the stark contradiction between the peaceful nature of the demonstrations and the heavy-handed repression meted out by Moroccan security forces. Reports confirm violent dispersals, bans on gatherings, and waves of arbitrary arrests, painting a grim picture of a regime clinging to its authoritarian reflexes rather than engaging with legitimate grievances.
By evoking memories of the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, the Spanish outlet underscored the historic magnitude of the unrest. It described the movement not as a fleeting protest, but as a deeply rooted social revolt born out of neglect, marginalization, and systemic failure. Morocco’s youth, faced with rampant unemployment, dilapidated health services, and a collapsing education system, are openly challenging a state apparatus more obsessed with prestige projects and international spectacles than with the dignity of its own people.
Observers note that the demonstrations, though met with force, are expanding to encompass more cities and broader demographics, signaling an intensifying challenge to the Makhzen’s narrative of stability. The regime’s resort to repression, instead of dialogue and reform, risks fanning the flames of discontent rather than extinguishing them.
In its analysis, El Confidencial left little doubt: Morocco is “living the atmosphere of an Arab Spring,” with a generation of young people no longer willing to accept empty promises and cosmetic reforms. The outcry for dignity, justice, and opportunity is louder than ever, while the Makhzen’s legitimacy stands increasingly fragile, exposed by its own failure to meet the most basic aspirations of its citizens.
