Spanish Newspaper Nueva Revolución Exposes Morocco’s Brutal Crackdown on Sahrawi Activists and Media in Defiance of International Law

Algiers, Algeria | June 15th, 2025 — In a compelling exposé, the Spanish newspaper Nueva Revolución has laid bare the harrowing extent of Morocco’s systematic repression in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, where Sahrawi human rights defenders, journalists, and civilians are enduring an unrelenting campaign of violence, intimidation, and silencing.

Citing detailed testimonies, the report sheds light on the Moroccan regime’s escalating violations—ranging from arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances to physical and psychological torture—targeting those who dare to advocate for the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination. The daily lives of Sahrawis, it notes, are marred by constant surveillance, harassment, and deliberate economic marginalization.

One particularly chilling account is that of Hassan Ezzrouali, a prominent journalist and member of the Sahrawi human rights collective CODESA (Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders). In a lengthy interview published by the newspaper and relayed by the Algerian Press Service (APS), Ezzrouali recounts a brutal raid by Moroccan police on his family home in the occupied city of Dakhla on January 19. The raid occurred while he was hosting a visiting Spanish delegation, which was forcibly expelled shortly after.

Both Ezzrouali and his father were subjected to violent assault during the incident, a glaring reflection of Rabat’s policy of targeting not just activists but also their families in an attempt to crush dissent.

He further revealed that on January 5, he was tortured by Moroccan police while inside his car. After witnessing several other Sahrawis being similarly abused, he and a companion were taken to a detention facility, where they endured a night of beatings, racial slurs, and dehumanizing insults from noon until five in the morning.

“If I were to recount everything the Sahrawi people suffer in the occupied territories, I would never finish,” Ezzrouali stated, adding that Moroccan authorities routinely deploy plainclothes agents to infiltrate and violently disperse peaceful protests calling for a long-promised referendum on self-determination.

He also described the regime’s suffocating grip over the information landscape in Western Sahara, pointing out the frequent denial of entry to foreign observers, including Spanish journalists and human rights advocates. This, he said, is part of a calculated effort by Rabat to enforce a wall of silence around the plight of the Sahrawi people and prevent international scrutiny.

The Nueva Revolución article serves as a stark indictment of the Moroccan occupation and its impunity, reaffirming the urgent need for international intervention to halt these grave abuses and uphold the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom, dignity, and sovereignty.

While the international community largely remains indifferent, Sahrawi voices like Ezzrouali’s pierce through the darkness, demanding accountability and justice. The Moroccan regime’s oppressive tactics are not only illegal under international law but also morally indefensible.
