Spanish Parliament Calls for Return to International Legality in Western Sahara Decolonization

ALGIERS- Despite the efforts of corrupt agents of the Moroccan regime, international legality, rooted in the United Nations Charter, inevitably catches up with them. This reality has once again come to pass as the Spanish Congress, the lower house of the Iberian parliament, adopted a non-binding resolution on Wednesday evening urging the government of Pedro Sanchez to immediately end its inexplicable support for Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara.

The resolution also demands that Spain resume its role as the “administering power” of these non-self-governing territories, with a focus on the legal and historical imperative of aiding in the decolonization of Western Sahara.

This latest development unfolds against the backdrop of a major political crisis in Spain, where two main factions are now at loggerheads following recent elections that marked the beginning of the decline of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) under Pedro Sanchez.

This decline is attributed to Sanchez’s increasingly blatant alignment with the interests of the Moroccan regime. Morocco was already a central topic of discussion in the Spanish Parliament on Wednesday. Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee deliberated and voted on a non-binding proposal from the Popular Party calling on Pedro Sanchez to return to “consensus” on the Sahara issue, in line with resolutions adopted by an absolute majority of deputies on June 30 and July 13, 2022.

This development, anticipated days earlier amid escalating political tensions, underscores the growing rift within Spanish politics. The conservative party also demands that the head of the executive branch inform deputies about “proposals made by the Secretary-General’s envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, as well as the situation and work of MINURSO.” Additionally, the proposal calls for intensified humanitarian actions for the benefit of the population in the Tindouf camps in Algeria.

Simultaneously, the Foreign Affairs Committee in the lower house had to consider and vote on another non-binding proposal, brought forward by members of Vox, urging the Sanchez government to compel Morocco to recognize Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta, Melilla, Chafarinas, Alhucemas, Vélez de la Gomera, and Perejil.

This widespread backlash against Pedro Sanchez demonstrates that full reconciliation between Madrid and Rabat is entirely elusive. Fundamental disagreements persist between the two kingdoms, making any comprehensive resolution unlikely. The latest point of contention relates to a complaint filed by Rabat regarding the treatment of its agricultural products in Spain. Despite this, Pedro Sanchez continues to defiantly resist calls for a return to wisdom, remaining ensnared by the overt blackmail exerted by the Moroccan regime.
