Speaker Boughali Marks the 65th Anniversary of the December 11, 1960 Demonstrations with a Message on National Memory

Algiers – December 2025 – On the eve of the 65th anniversary of the historic December 11, 1960 demonstrations, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali, delivered a solemn message on social media this Wednesday, underscoring that those mass uprisings “constituted a decisive turning point in the course of the Liberation Revolution.”
Boughali emphasized that commemorating such pivotal milestones forms part of the enduring commitment of the Algerian state, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to safeguard national memory and anchor the values of loyalty to the sacrifices of the chouhada and moudjahidine. He recalled that the December 11 demonstrations were not an isolated occurrence but rather a continuation of a long and unbroken chain of struggle, crowned by successive victories—from the October 17, 1961 demonstrations in Paris, to Victory Day on March 19, 1962, culminating in the restoration of national sovereignty on July 5, 1962. “The blood of the martyrs,” he insisted, “proves that freedom is seized; it is never granted.”
The APN Speaker further highlighted that Algerians had taken to the streets in an unprecedented peaceful mobilization, expressing with one voice their rejection of colonial schemes and attempts to erase national identity. By raising the banner of freedom and independence, he said, the people enabled the entire world to witness the righteousness of the Algerian cause within the United Nations.
In his concluding remarks, Boughali stressed that defending national memory is an imprescriptible collective responsibility. He affirmed that the “New Algeria”—victorious and forward-moving under the leadership of President Tebboune—is firmly advancing toward the construction of a strong state rooted in institutions and law, and toward comprehensive development that empowers citizens and upholds the principles of justice and well-being. This, he noted, is being achieved through wide-ranging reforms and programmes implemented across all sectors nationwide.
For Boughali, celebrating this anniversary is “a renewal of the pact with the chouhada and moudjahidine, and a firm commitment to continue building a victorious Algeria, worthy of its millennia-old history and of the aspirations of its sons and daughters.”
