Speaker Boughali Receives President of Pan-African Parliament, Affirms Importance of Strengthening Joint Parliamentary Action

Algiers – December  2025 – In a step reaffirming Algeria’s consistent commitment to African parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali, received on Sunday in Algiers the President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Fortune Charumbira. The meeting, held in the wake of the international momentum generated by Algeria’s hosting of the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, underscored a shared determination to advance the aspirations of African peoples and fortify institutional cooperation across the continent.

According to a statement issued by the PNA, Boughali expressed great pleasure in receiving his distinguished guest, who earlier in the day attended the opening session of the high-level conference devoted to examining the historical and contemporary ramifications of colonial crimes in Africa. In this regard, he stressed that the PAP “is called upon today to play a greater and more decisive role in meeting the aspirations of African peoples for development, peace, and stability,” thereby reaffirming Algeria’s strategic vision of a resilient and united Africa.

Boughali reiterated the full openness of the APN to “all proposals and initiatives that may strengthen partnership and exchange between the Assembly’s committees and the PAP.” He emphasized, with particular insistence, “the importance of guaranteeing the principle of alternation in the presidency of the PAP,” describing it as a foundational pillar for entrenching transparency, good governance, and institutional credibility within the continental body. This stance aligns with Algeria’s long-standing advocacy for reforms that enhance the representativeness and democratic legitimacy of African institutions.

For his part, PAP President Fortune Charumbira conveyed “his profound satisfaction at being among his brothers in Algeria,” noting that being accompanied by two assistants—one of whom is Algerian—constituted “a clear message of respect and appreciation for Algeria.” He praised “the Algerian competencies made available to the PAP,” highlighting “their efficiency and crucial role within the institution.”

Reflecting on his participation in the opening of the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, Charumbira emphasized its “major importance,” affirming that the event is “a testament to a shared struggle against all forms of colonialism.” He called for the institutionalization of this conference on an annual basis in order “to definitively eliminate all remnants of colonialism on the continent.” His remarks echoed both Algeria’s principled stance and Africa’s collective demand for historical justice.

Within the framework of inter-parliamentary cooperation, Charumbira underscored the need to “strengthen coordination between the PAP committees and those of the APN, in order to benefit from the Algerian parliamentary experience,” which he described as “pioneering and exceptional.” He further asserted that Algeria is “among the countries most qualified to assume the presidency of the PAP,” adding that “he will be among the first to support it in this endeavour.”

The meeting thus reaffirmed Algeria’s influential role within African institutions and its unwavering commitment to promoting democratic governance, institutional transparency, and continental solidarity.
