Speaker Nasri Receives Russian Ambassador as Algeria and Russia Pledge to Elevate Strategic Partnership

High-Level Diplomatic Meeting Highlights Deepening Bilateral Cooperation and Shared Commitment to Regional Stability and Global Dialogue

Algiers, Algeria | May 27th, 2025 — Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azouz Nasri, received on Tuesday in Algiers the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Algeria, His Excellency Alexey Solomatin, during a courtesy visit that reaffirmed the strength and evolution of Algerian-Russian relations.

According to a statement from the upper house of Parliament, Ambassador Solomatin presented Speaker Nasri with a congratulatory letter from his counterpart, the President of the Federation Council of Russia, Mrs. Valentina Matvienko, in celebration of Nasri’s recent election as Speaker of the Council of the Nation.

This high-level meeting provided an opportunity to assess the state and promising future of the historic and long-standing friendship between Algeria and Russia—ties that have gained new momentum following the June 2023 signing of the Declaration of Enhanced Strategic Partnership, endorsed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two parties explored mechanisms for investing in this privileged partnership with the aim of elevating it to new heights and diversifying its areas of cooperation. Speaker Nasri lauded the growing dynamism of bilateral collaboration, highlighting its expansion across all sectors, in alignment with the sweeping transformation and unprecedented development experienced by the New Algeria under President Tebboune’s leadership.

He further recalled the strategic significance of the newly adopted Investment Law by both houses of Parliament, noting that it fosters a favorable and secure environment for investors through a wide array of incentives. This legal framework, he emphasized, is designed to attract both domestic and foreign investments and bolster Algeria’s national economic diversification agenda.

Turning to regional and global matters, Nasri reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to peaceful and just conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy—principles that guide its active engagement on the UN Security Council. He reiterated Algeria’s longstanding positions in support of the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to establish an independent state with El-Qods as its capital, and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, in accordance with international resolutions and United Nations charters.

Ambassador Solomatin expressed his appreciation for the quality of bilateral cooperation, noting the tangible progress made in recent years. He stressed the importance of enhancing and expanding these relations further. Both parties agreed on the necessity of fostering inter-parliamentary dialogue and consultation—both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks—as a key component in supporting the broader strategic cooperation between Algeria and Russia.

The encounter concluded with a shared commitment to reinforcing the strategic partnership, building on decades of mutual trust, shared values, and geopolitical solidarity.
