Special Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall and Significant Snowfall to Affect Northern Algeria
Algiers – December 2025 – Northern Algeria is set to experience a marked deterioration in weather conditions starting Monday, 22 December 2025, with heavy rainfall and significant snowfall forecast across wide areas of the country, according to a Special Weather Bulletin (BMS) issued by the National Meteorological Office.
The bulletin warns of substantial rainfall affecting several northern wilayas, with precipitation expected to be locally heavy and, in some areas, intense enough to cause disruptions. In the western coastal and inland regions, including Ain Témouchent, Oran, Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Chlef, and Relizane, rainfall is forecast from 00:00 to 12:00 on Monday, with estimated accumulations ranging between 20 and 40 millimeters.
Further east, Tipaza, Algiers, Boumerdès, Ain Defla, Médéa, and Blida will be impacted from 06:00 to 15:00, where rainfall amounts are expected to reach 20 to 30 millimeters. As the system progresses, Tizi Ouzou, Béjaïa, Jijel, Bouira, northern Sétif, and Mila will experience similar conditions between 12:00 and 22:00, with comparable rainfall totals.
In the eastern regions, including Skikda, Annaba, El Tarf, Constantine, Guelma, and Souk Ahras, rainfall will intensify from 18:00 on Monday until 06:00 on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, with estimated amounts of 20 to 30 millimeters, potentially reaching or locally exceeding 40 millimeters, heightening the risk of runoff and localized flooding.
In parallel, the bulletin highlights significant snowfall across elevated areas of the northern highlands and interior regions. Snowfall is expected over Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbès, Saïda, Tiaret, Naâma, El Bayadh, and Laghouat from 03:00 to 12:00 on Monday, with snow depths estimated between 5 and 10 centimeters on elevations at or above 1,000 meters.
Central highland wilayas, namely Djelfa, Tissemsilt, Ain Defla, Médéa, Blida, Bouira, and Tizi Ouzou, are forecast to see snowfall from 09:00 to 18:00, with similar accumulations of 5 to 10 centimeters on heights reaching or exceeding 1,100 meters.
Further east, Béjaïa, Jijel, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Sétif, Mila, Constantine, Batna, Khenchela, Oum El Bouaghi, and Tébessa will be affected from 12:00 on Monday until 01:00 on Tuesday, with snowfall depths also estimated at 5 to 10 centimeters on elevations above 1,100 meters.
Authorities urge motorists and residents in affected regions, particularly mountainous areas, to exercise heightened caution due to slippery roads, reduced visibility, and potential travel disruptions.
