State Stands by Victims of Oued El-Harrach Tragedy: From Condolences to Structural Reform

Algiers, Algeria | In the wake of the catastrophic bus accident that plunged into Oued El-Harrach, leaving 18 dead and 23 injured, the Algerian government has demonstrated a full-scale mobilization of solidarity, compassion, and concrete action. Beyond condolences and visits, the tragedy has prompted a decisive turn toward structural reform in the nation’s public transport system.

Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui was among the first to visit Salim Zemirli Hospital in Algiers, where many of the injured were admitted. He conveyed President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s compassion and pledged the full mobilization of state resources to ensure optimal medical care. His visit was marked by heartfelt encouragement to medical teams, whose swift professionalism—together with the immediate intervention of civil protection units and hospital services—was hailed as critical in containing the impact of the tragedy. To secure the medical supply chain, the Central Hospital Pharmacy was placed under a state of heightened vigilance, ensuring uninterrupted access to vital medicines.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior, Brahim Merad, visited the bereaved families across several communes of the capital, carrying the condolences of President Tebboune. His words carried more than symbolic weight: “The State’s support does not end with condolences but extends to sustained accompaniment.” His pledge echoed the government’s determination to remain engaged well beyond the mourning period, affirming the principle of institutional responsibility toward citizens in moments of collective pain.

The Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saïhi, also underscored the dual imperative of medical and psychological care. He announced that all necessary therapeutic resources were mobilized, including specific antibiotic protocols to counter risks linked to polluted waters. Simultaneously, specialized psychological teams were deployed to help victims and families cope with the deep trauma inflicted by the accident.

Yet this tragedy is more than a moment of grief; it is a wake-up call. Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud announced the immediate withdrawal of obsolete buses from circulation, a move hailed as both urgent and overdue. For years, civil society and road safety advocates have warned of the dangers posed by Algeria’s aging transport fleet. The Oued El-Harrach catastrophe has brutally exposed these structural vulnerabilities, forcing the state to accelerate long-awaited reforms.

While funerals are still being held and families grapple with unbearable loss, the government’s presence has been both symbolic and operational—offering solace, medical attention, and reform pledges. The accident is already reshaping the national debate on transport safety, institutional accountability, and the dignity of citizens.
