Strategic Bilateral Advancement: Algeria Hosts the 20th Session of the Algerian-Mauritanian High Joint Commission

Algiers, Monday, April 6, 2026 – The 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian High Joint Commission for Cooperation officially opens this Tuesday in Algiers, underscoring the enduring strength and evolving scope of bilateral relations between Algeria and Mauritania.

The session will be co-chaired by Algeria’s Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, and his Mauritanian counterpart, Mokhtar Ould Diay, who arrived in Algiers on Monday at the head of a high-level ministerial delegation. According to an official statement from the Algerian Prime Minister’s office, Ould Diay’s visit “reflects the positive momentum in bilateral relations and embodies the shared determination of the two governments to elevate cooperation to broader horizons, serving mutual interests and strengthening the fraternal ties between the peoples of Algeria and Mauritania.”

Economic Cooperation at the Forefront

At the heart of this 20th session is the economic dimension of the bilateral agenda. The commission will examine strategies to develop partnerships, encourage investment, and facilitate trade, with particular emphasis on the development of border regions and the deepening of economic integration between the two nations. The dossiers, agreements, and memoranda of understanding scheduled for signing have been meticulously prepared and vetted during a prior session of expert-level discussions held last Saturday in Algiers.

Algeria has already established a presence in Mauritania through investments in key sectors such as construction, agriculture, and the textile industry. Notable examples include the Belaid Group’s projects and initiatives under the Algerian Federation of Textiles and Leather, which launched in May 2025 a production, exhibition, and distribution center in Nouakchott. These early investments set the foundation for an expanded wave of cross-border projects, supported by incentives aimed at promoting private and public sector participation from both countries.

Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Trade

Facilitating trade and economic exchanges is central to the agenda. Highlighted initiatives include the 840 km Tindouf–Zouerate road project, which promises to enhance connectivity between Algeria and Mauritania and streamline commercial activity. Similarly, the Tindouf free-trade zone is set to become a pivotal hub for industrial and commercial exchanges between Algeria, Mauritania, and the broader West African region.

The progress on these projects has been remarkable. As of February, road and infrastructure works managed by the National Public Works Company had surpassed 58% completion, while storage areas and customs zones overseen by the National Civil Engineering and Construction Company exceeded 65%. Residential facilities in the zone are 91% complete, signaling the readiness of both countries to rapidly operationalize the agreements set to emerge from the 20th session.

The forthcoming agreements are expected to consolidate an ambitious vision for bilateral cooperation, with shared political will from the highest levels of government in both countries ensuring momentum and swift execution. By focusing on investment, trade facilitation, and regional development, Algeria and Mauritania aim to infuse their historic partnership with renewed dynamism and a forward-looking economic and strategic vision.
