Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Speaker Nasri Welcomes Malaysian Ambassador to Algeria

Algiers – September 2025 – In a diplomatic encounter reflecting the depth of Algeria’s strategic orientation towards Asia, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, received on Monday the Ambassador of Malaysia to Algeria, Rozani Irwan Mohamed Mazlan, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Council’s headquarters.

The meeting provided an opportunity to revisit the historical roots and current dynamism of Algerian-Malaysian relations, which trace back to the late 1960s and were forged in the spirit of solidarity through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement. Both officials reaffirmed that these ties, once marked by political fraternity and mutual support during Algeria’s liberation struggle, are now poised for a qualitative leap in economic and commercial cooperation, mirroring the exemplary political and diplomatic coordination between the two nations.

Nasri underscored the consistency of bilateral political ties, paying tribute to Malaysia’s “political, material, and moral support for the Algerian Revolution, and the continuity that has shaped relations in the decades following independence.” He stressed the urgency of expanding cooperation into economic and commercial domains, highlighting investment opportunities and joint ventures as essential to consolidating the bilateral partnership.

In this regard, Nasri drew attention to Algeria’s recent pivot towards Asia, embodied in its accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), signed in Kuala Lumpur. He emphasized that this step paves the way for deeper engagement with ASEAN nations, particularly Malaysia, with promising prospects in trade, investment, and sustainable development. Academic and cultural exchanges, he added, remain indispensable levers for strengthening people-to-people ties and nurturing long-term understanding.

On global issues, both sides noted the convergence of their diplomatic positions, with Nasri reiterating Algeria and Malaysia’s unwavering defense of the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. He reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast diplomatic doctrine, rooted in the principles of peoples’ right to self-determination and the primacy of peaceful solutions as the cornerstone for ensuring sustainable peace and security.

Ambassador Mazlan, for his part, expressed Malaysia’s pride in its privileged relationship with Algeria, praising its “leading role in supporting liberation and development causes, and its active contributions within international and regional organizations.” He saluted Algeria’s proactive stance as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in defending just causes, foremost among them Palestine, and reaffirmed his country’s aspiration to deepen economic and trade cooperation with Algeria.

Mazlan also highlighted Malaysia’s interest in broadening partnerships in strategic sectors, including agribusiness, transformation industries, digitalization, mining exploration, and clean energies. He welcomed the “resounding success” of the Intra-African Trade Fair recently hosted by Algeria, describing it as a platform that further cements Algeria’s role as a gateway to Africa.

On the parliamentary front, both parties agreed to intensify cooperation between the Council of the Nation and the Malaysian Parliament through exchanges of expertise and visits, and by enhancing coordination within international parliamentary fora. Nasri underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy as a powerful vector for reinforcing political and economic ties, while both delegations emphasized the creation of parliamentary friendship groups as a means to institutionalize bilateral cooperation.

In a symbolic culmination of this rapprochement, both sides celebrated Algeria’s accession, on September 20, 2025, as the sole observer member of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) during its 46th session held in Kuala Lumpur. This milestone, hailed as a “major diplomatic achievement,” reflects Algeria’s determination to expand its parliamentary footprint and to broaden its outreach within the Asian sphere.
