Suleiman Ould Sheikh Hamdi: U.S. Interference in Western Sahara an Attempt to Shake Global Security Frameworks Toward New Compromises

Algiers – October 2025 – Under the analytical lens of security and strategic affairs expert, Suleiman Ould Sheikh Hamdi, the recent stance of the United States regarding the Western Sahara conflict cannot be dismissed as a mere bias in favor of Morocco or a retreat from international legality. Rather, it constitutes a deliberate maneuver within a broader American agenda aimed at restructuring global security frameworks according to Washington’s unilateral calculations.
Speaking to Akhbar Al-Watan, Ould Sheikh Hamdi emphasized that the Trump-era foreign policy ethos is characterized by a penchant for extreme posturing followed by a calculated retreat to a so-called middle ground, effectively testing the reactions of involved parties before advancing purportedly balanced settlements. Within this approach, the Western Sahara issue has been subsumed into a strategic experiment despite its intricate historical and political complexity.
The expert warned that the American maneuver should not be understood merely as a challenge to United Nations efforts; rather, it represents a potential co-optation of the MINURSO mandate under the guise of a broader international framework, thereby diluting the authority of the United Nations while superficially preserving its institutional presence. As Ould Sheikh Hamdi notes, the U.S. is effectively seeking to integrate the UN into a unilateral strategy that redistributes the costs and responsibilities of peace on its own terms, sidelining the principles of impartiality and legitimacy.
Furthermore, the international calculus surrounding the conflict is entering a phase of structural realignment, in which traditional post-Cold War parameters no longer apply. Some states that support the Polisario Front, particularly Russia and certain African Union members, view Washington’s maneuver with suspicion, although they are unlikely to resort to a veto unless leveraged as part of broader geopolitical bargaining, in arenas such as Ukraine or other interlinked international conflicts.
Ould Sheikh Hamdi concluded by stressing that any sustainable resolution must reconcile international legitimacy with de facto control on the ground: “Morocco controls the territory but lacks international legitimacy, whereas the Polisario Front possesses UN recognition without territorial authority. A durable solution must bridge these dual realities to guarantee regional stability and security—today inextricably linked to global security dynamics.”
In essence, the United States’ recent intervention in Western Sahara constitutes a reckless overreach, attempting to bend an intractable conflict to its geopolitical strategy, undermining international norms, threatening regional equilibrium, and subordinating multilateral legitimacy to unilateral expediency.
