President Abdelmadjid Tebboune Welcomes Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Algiers, Marking a Milestone in Algerian-Omani Relations with a Focus on Investment, Diplomacy, and Shared Regional Vision

Algiers, Algeria | May 4th, 2025 — In a powerful affirmation of deep-rooted ties and shared strategic ambitions, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune welcomed Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman with full state honours on Sunday afternoon at Algiers’ Houari Boumediene International Airport, marking the start of a highly anticipated two-day state visit.

Accompanied by senior government officials and high-ranking state dignitaries, President Tebboune offered a formal welcome to his distinguished guest and brother, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, underscoring the depth of brotherly relations between Algeria and the Sultanate of Oman. The solemn reception included the performance of the national anthems of both nations, a ceremonial military parade by detachments of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), and a 21-gun salute echoing in honour of the Sultan’s arrival.

This visit comes as part of a renewed drive by both nations to elevate their long-standing relations into a privileged strategic partnership across various sectors. In recent years, Algerian-Omani relations have witnessed a dynamic upswing, propelled by a common vision shared by President Tebboune and Sultan Haitham to consolidate and expand bilateral cooperation.

During their official talks, the two leaders will examine avenues to strengthen mutual collaboration and will exchange views on pressing regional and international matters—foremost among them the Palestinian cause. This visit builds on President Tebboune’s landmark state visit to Muscat in October of last year, which concluded with a joint communiqué affirming both countries’ commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in service of their peoples’ shared interests.

In pursuit of this goal, the two nations have already engaged in robust diplomatic and economic activity. The previous summit resulted in the signing of eight memoranda of understanding covering critical fields such as investment promotion, education, environmental sustainability, financial services, employment, training, and media cooperation. A notable outcome was the announcement of plans to establish a joint Algerian-Omani investment fund aimed at developing key sectors including renewable energy, petrochemicals, desert agriculture, technology, and tourism.

The two leaders have emphasized the importance of intensifying exchanges between public and private sectors, encouraging greater participation of business communities, and leveraging the strategic positioning of both countries to boost exports to regional and global markets. The state visit is also expected to consolidate private sector collaboration, particularly in industrial and pharmaceutical production. Algerian operators have already expressed readiness to enter into pharmaceutical partnerships with their Omani counterparts.

Cultural diplomacy remains a vital part of this bilateral renaissance. Earlier this year, Algeria participated prominently in the 29th Muscat International Book Fair, showcasing 900 titles from 43 Algerian publishing houses, thereby strengthening cultural dialogue and intellectual exchange between the two nations.

Efforts to solidify cooperation in the mining sector have also gained momentum. In April, an Omani delegation visited Algeria to explore investment opportunities in mining and resource exploitation, further signaling both sides’ intention to foster long-term strategic partnerships.

The Sultan’s visit to Algeria is not merely ceremonial—it is a testament to a renewed and ambitious bilateral agenda rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a collective vision for a more prosperous and stable Arab region.
