Summer Season 2024: A Positive Assessment Sparks Optimism for Algeria’s Tourism Sector

Algiers, Algeria | October 27th, 2024 — In a recent address in Algiers, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Mokhtar Didouche presented a comprehensive review of Algeria’s 2024 summer season, emphasizing the heightened priority the government places on tourism as a “vital engine” for national development. Didouche highlighted the notable achievements of this season, marked by a significant increase in the number of beaches approved for swimming—445 out of a total of 638 beaches across fourteen coastal wilayas, a rise from previous years.

“This summer season holds particular importance for Algeria, characterized by vibrant tourism activity and a significant influx of visitors, including both Algerians residing abroad and local families,” Didouche noted. He emphasized that this surge in visitors is not only invigorating the local economy but is also generating substantial seasonal employment, providing valuable job opportunities, especially for the country’s youth.

The minister also reported a noticeable increase in visitors to inland wilayas, indicating a growing interest in Algeria’s diverse attractions and destinations across the country. He reiterated that the goal is to solidify Algeria’s position as a “preferred tourism destination” while ensuring the protection and promotion of the nation’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

The demand for accommodations at coastal resorts and hotels has reached unprecedented levels this season, with the available options falling short, according to Didouche. This has led many Algerians seeking a summer retreat to turn to private apartment rentals, a trend that underscores the sector’s capacity challenges. Didouche expressed his satisfaction with the overall outcome of the 2024 summer season, encouraging continuous collaboration among all stakeholders to sustain this positive momentum and position tourism as a catalyst for economic and social development in Algeria.

Concluding his remarks, Didouche reaffirmed the government’s commitment to boosting domestic tourism as a national priority, highlighting the strategic importance of the tourism sector to Algeria’s socio-economic growth and development. “Our objective,” he stated, “is to continue our efforts to establish Algeria as a destination of choice, while preserving and enhancing our natural and cultural heritage. These encouraging results underscore the vitality of Algeria’s tourism sector and its potential for growth, paving the way for new opportunities and initiatives to further enhance the country’s appeal as a top tourism destination.”

Echoing this positive outlook, Djamel Alili, Director General of Tourism at the Ministry, described the 2024 summer season as “successful” given the high volume of vacationers at coastal wilayas. Alili credited this success to qualitative improvements made at beaches nationwide and called for ongoing efforts to strengthen beach development plans and address areas requiring improvement.
