Tamanrasset Unaffected: No Cholera Cases Reported Amid Heightened Regional Surveillance

Algiers – November 2025 –  The southern Algerian wilaya of Tamanrasset remains free of cholera cases, according to Professor Elias Akhamoukh, head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the local hospital. Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Professor Akhamoukh confirmed that no cases of cholera have been detected so far, while underscoring that health authorities have activated a comprehensive vigilance system in response to the disease’s resurgence in several neighboring countries.

This preventive mobilization, he explained, reflects Algeria’s proactive approach to safeguarding public health in a region marked by intense cross-border movement. “All medical professionals across the wilaya have undergone specific training to respond swiftly and effectively to any potential health emergency,” Professor Akhamoukh stated, emphasizing the preparedness of local medical teams.

However, the senior specialist also reminded that Tamanrasset continues to record the highest national rates of malaria and diphtheria, largely due to its strategic geographical position as a southern gateway for foreign nationals entering Algeria. This reality, he noted, necessitates sustained vigilance and continuous epidemiological monitoring.

Comprehensive Vaccination Campaign Extending to Foreign Residents

Highlighting the inclusive nature of Algeria’s preventive health policy, Professor Akhamoukh announced the integration of foreign residents into national vaccination programs. Between 2023 and 2025, more than 33,000 foreign nationals have been vaccinated as part of collective protection measures against infectious diseases. “Public health is indivisible,” he asserted, stressing that epidemic control requires a unified and inclusive approach that transcends nationality.

For his part, Dr. Djamel Fourar, Director General of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, hailed the “notable success” of the national immunization strategy. He affirmed that vaccination coverage rates for both poliomyelitis and diphtheria have reached exceptionally high levels nationwide — a testament, he said, to the effectiveness of the Ministry’s preventive strategy and the population’s adherence to public health initiatives.

According to Dr. Fourar, anti-polio vaccination campaigns have reached an impressive 2,287,901 children between 2023 and 2024, encompassing 19 southern wilayas. Meanwhile, anti-diphtheria vaccination efforts have so far targeted 84,370 individuals in Skikda and 43,197 others in Aïn Defla as of November 11, 2025.

In conclusion, Dr. Fourar reaffirmed the ongoing commitment of preventive medicine and epidemiological teams across the country. Their mission, he said, is not only to maintain close surveillance but to ensure early detection and rapid containment of any potential epidemic outbreak.
