Tassili n’Ajjer Aménokal Bakri Ghouma Denounces Fabricated Succession and Warns Against Foreign Agendas

Algiers – October 2025 – In a unequivocal declaration, Nacer El Bakri Ghouma, the Aménokal of Tassili n’Ajjer and senior figure among the imgharen, has denounced what he described as a “gross manipulation” surrounding a fabricated succession claim naming Hussein Ben Kalala as his replacement. Through an official communiqué, the respected leader rejected the move as baseless, devoid of historical legitimacy, and alien to the ancestral customs of the Azjer.
Addressing the notables and sheikhs of the region across Algeria, Libya, and neighboring countries, El Bakri stated that he had been inundated with calls and correspondence inquiring about gatherings organized in his name. These meetings, he said, exploited the legacy of the revered leader and mujahid Ibrahim Ag Abkada (may Allah rest his soul), as well as other respected figures, without consultation or consent. He condemned the use of “fictitious investitures” as deceptive practices designed to mislead public opinion.
“This initiative does not reflect the genuine will of the sons of the Azjer,” El Bakri stressed, describing it instead as a narrow scheme tied to internal and external agendas that undermine unity. He strongly warned against political parties or any external entities interfering in tribal affairs and traditions, labeling such behavior a flagrant violation of Algerian law, particularly the statutes regulating public gatherings.
El Bakri further expressed deep concern over the timing of these maneuvers, noting that they emerge at a moment of sensitive geopolitical and social transitions, compounded by serious security threats along Algeria’s borders. Rather than reinforcing cohesion, he argued, such actions play directly into the hands of foreign agendas aimed at weakening national unity.
While refraining from naming those suspected of orchestrating these schemes, the Aménokal made clear that “whoever they are, they will never achieve their objectives.” He concluded with an uncompromising reminder: “The unity of the Azjer is a red line that cannot be crossed. Historical legitimacy is immutable and non-negotiable. Any attempt to exploit the sacrifices of our ancestors for partisan, electoral, or foreign projects is a betrayal of future generations and an affront to the blood of our martyrs.”
