President Tebboune Appoints Veteran Magistrate Leila Aslaoui as President of Algeria’s Constitutional Court

Algiers, Algeria | July 8th, 2025 — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has appointed Leila Aslaoui as President of the Constitutional Court, one of the nation’s highest judicial bodies. The appointment, formalized on Monday by presidential decree, is grounded in Articles 91 (paragraph 7), 92 (paragraph 1), 186, and 188 of the Constitution.

 

Leila Aslaoui, a seasoned magistrate known for her legal acumen and unyielding integrity, succeeds Omar Belhadj, who had held the position since the Court’s establishment in 2021 following the constitutional revision that replaced the former Constitutional Council. As head of the Court, Aslaoui will preside over an institution tasked with safeguarding the supremacy of the Constitution, overseeing legislative compliance, arbitrating institutional disputes, and ruling on the constitutionality of electoral and legislative procedures.
