The End of an Era: Mounting Tensions in Morocco’s Royal Palace

Algiers, Algeria |  The Moroccan monarchy stands at a precarious crossroads. As reports in Le Monde suggest, the reign of King Mohammed VI—marred by prolonged absences, opaque governance, and intertwining political and economic interests—may be approaching its twilight. The sense of an “end of reign” atmosphere is no longer confined to whispers in Rabat’s corridors; it is increasingly visible in the public sphere.

A Monarch in Retreat, a Crown Prince in Ascendancy

At 62, Mohammed VI’s pattern of long absences has raised doubts about his ability—or willingness—to steer the affairs of state. His rare appearances, meticulously choreographed, only reinforce speculation of a ruler detached from governance.

By contrast, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, just 22, has stepped firmly into the spotlight. With a growing presence at official functions and an accelerated integration into the military establishment, he is being groomed as the face of continuity. Yet, his rise underscores a deeper reality: the Moroccan throne is already being prepared for a transition.

The Return of Lalla Salma: Symbolism and Unanswered Questions

Adding to the intrigue is the re-emergence of Princess Lalla Salma, the king’s estranged consort, seen publicly alongside her son, the Crown Prince. Her rare appearance rekindles speculation about her future role in a post-Mohammed VI era. To many, her visibility signals more than familial solidarity—it may foreshadow a recalibration of palace dynamics once the succession unfolds.

What makes the Moroccan monarchy unique—and controversial—is the inseparable bond between power and wealth. The royal holding SNI–Al Mada (formerly Siger) exerts colossal influence over banking, energy, real estate, and agriculture. One of its most striking deals, the €12 billion agreement with Emirati conglomerate TAQA in 2024, illustrates the direct grip of the palace over Morocco’s economic arteries.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch epitomizes the blurred line between governance and business. His conglomerate, Akwa Group, recently secured the contract for Casablanca’s desalination mega-project—a deal critics decry as the textbook case of conflict of interest, where political power and corporate gain merge seamlessly.

Leaked Scandals and the Digital Battlefield

Recent leaks by the group JabaRoot DZ targeting senior officials exposed hidden wealth and questionable dealings, amplifying the sense of decay within the ruling elite. These revelations are more than cyber incidents; they reveal the fragility of a regime where secrecy, privilege, and monopoly are increasingly challenged by digital transparency and public scrutiny.
