Algiers, Algeria | November 11th, 2024 — The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has praised Algeria’s notable advancements in information and communication technology (ICT) and its commitment to digital inclusion, according to Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Karim Bibi Triki. Speaking at the opening of a regional ITU workshop titled “Towards Inclusive and Targeted Connectivity in the Arab Region,” Bibi Triki highlighted Algeria’s substantial investments and policy focus aimed at extending modern communication technologies to all citizens.
Joined by Meriem Benmouloud, Minister of Digitalization and Statistics, Bibi Triki emphasized the government’s drive to expand ICT access across Algeria, irrespective of citizens’ social standing or geographic location. He noted that recent progress includes significant improvements in both mobile and fixed internet access as well as optical fiber expansion, supported by a robust political commitment from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to position Algeria as a regional leader in ICT.
Qualified Human Resources and Technological Infrastructure
Bibi Triki underscored Algeria’s human capital, noting a skilled and competitive workforce, including a younger generation eager to advance national ICT ambitions through entrepreneurial initiatives. He outlined several large-scale projects that have accelerated Algeria’s economic and technological landscape, aligning with the country’s digital transformation objectives.
Strengthening Cooperation with ITU
Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algérie Télécom, described the workshop as a testament to ITU’s confidence in Algeria’s ICT efforts and the fruitful collaboration between the two entities. Bentoumi remarked on the vital role of connectivity in sustainable development, emphasizing that digital access fosters social and economic integration. Algérie Télécom is focused on broadening digital service access through modern infrastructure, supporting Algeria’s governmental strategy to build a digitally inclusive society.
According to Bentoumi, digital equity remains a central goal, with the organization striving to ensure equal access to ICT services across the country. He praised ITU’s initiatives for enhancing cooperation in the Arab region, which he sees as essential to achieving regional digital development.
Regional Perspective on Connectivity and Development
Adel Darwish, ITU’s Regional Director for Arab States, noted that Algeria has achieved remarkable ICT coverage of over 85%. He emphasized that global digital connectivity is essential for sustainable development and that secure, affordable access to mobile and internet services is integral to this progress. Yet, he pointed out that 31% of the Arab population remains unconnected, primarily in underdeveloped, remote, and rural areas lacking access to essential social services.
Darwish stressed the importance of this workshop in addressing these connectivity gaps by discussing practical solutions and investment priorities. He affirmed the ITU Regional Office’s commitment to promoting cooperation among stakeholders at local, regional, and global levels to advance digital inclusion.
