“The Last Queen” of Algiers Takes Part in C-Movie Film Festival in Italy

The boundless success of this feature film continues with a new destination. This time, the last queen of Algiers makes her debut in Italian cinemas, coinciding with the launch of the first edition of the C-Movie Film Festival.

The event, born in Rimini, Italy, promises a festival entirely dedicated to female cinema. Over four days, from March 20th to 23rd, 2024, the festival offers a rich program of meetings and screenings, focusing on women as actresses, directors, producers, and more.

“The Last Queen,” the Forgotten Figure of Algiers

The release of the Algerian film “The Last Queen” in Italian cinemas is scheduled to begin on March 21st, 2024. This feature film highlights the sometimes blurred line between legend and history.

Directed by Damien Ounouri and Adila Bendimerad, the historical drama recounts the remarkable journey of Zaphira, whose existence was never confirmed but whose story remains intertwined with the city of Algiers.

“The Last Queen” portrays Algiers in 1516, liberated by Salim Toumi with the decisive assistance of the corsair Arroudj Barberousse, who becomes the hero of the city. Despite their alliance, rumors spread through the alleys of the Casbah after the assassination of King Salim Toumi, suggesting that Arroudj himself killed Zaphira’s husband.

Amidst secret negotiations, power struggles, and personal grief, only one person seeks to uncover the truth behind Salim Toumi’s death. One woman chooses to remain in the city while the entire court flees, determined to uncover the true culprits and ensure her son Yahia succeeds his late father one day.
