The Moroccan Monarchy: A Pillar of Global Imperialism

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – In early September 2025, eight women died within a single week following cesarean operations at the public hospital of Agadir. The tragedy acted as a detonator. Across the country, an exasperated youth took to the streets to denounce the collapse of the healthcare and education systems, social arrogance, and institutional contempt.

Public anger targeted Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, widely seen as the embodiment of an obscene crony capitalism. King Mohammed VI, however, was carefully spared from criticism. As the Africa Cup of Nations approached, repression descended—brutal, methodical, and deterrent. The movement was crushed.

This sequence further cracked the official narrative of a modern, stable, and emerging Morocco—a narrative patiently cultivated by the regime and relayed abroad, particularly in France, by a political class spanning the entire ideological spectrum. From the far right to the institutional left, “friends of the King” abound. Discreet invitations, luxury stays, and media complacency are exchanged for privileged access to the Palace, while the social reality is conveniently ignored.

In the streets, one slogan imposed itself: “We want hospitals, not stadiums.” From September 27 to October 10, it was chanted daily by high school and university students grouped under the informal banner of Gen Z 212. Born under the reign of Mohammed VI, this generation has known nothing but unemployment, precarity, and hollow promises. Claiming to be independent, peaceful, and outside party politics, it denounces corruption and inequality while demanding the resignation of Aziz Akhannouch—yet forbids any criticism of the monarchy. Many still appeal to royal arbitration, clinging to the illusion of a king standing above the system.

That illusion quickly shattered. The monarch ignored the protests. The government announced reforms no one believed. The police completed the task: deaths, mass arrests, heavy sentences, and intimidation of families. Fear reclaimed its territory.

Morocco remains among the most unequal countries in the Maghreb. One-third of the population is illiterate. Millions of young people are unemployed and untrained. Public education is collapsing while private schooling thrives. Healthcare has been surrendered to financiers. Public hospitals lack the most basic resources, while private clinics absorb the bulk of public funds. Women die for lack of elementary equipment as shareholders accumulate profits.

This social disaster coexists with a carefully staged economic showcase: official growth figures, mass tourism, phosphates, the automotive sector, and giant ports. Tanger Med epitomizes this model—a strategic hub serving multinational corporations, built with billions in public money, while neighboring villages remain without roads or hospitals. Debt finances capital’s infrastructure; the population pays the price.

In Western Sahara, imperialism finds a new playground. Annexation, endorsed in defiance of international law, is the quid pro quo for normalization with the Zionist entity. Energy, mining, and port multinationals rush in. Wind, solar, green hydrogen—under the banner of transition, plunder intensifies. The Sahrawi cause, once a tool of national mobilization, has been reduced to a business argument.

Free trade agreements have completed Morocco’s integration into global capitalism on profoundly unequal terms. Subsistence agriculture has been sacrificed, land seized, water resources exhausted, and workers ruthlessly exploited. A local bourgeoisie has enriched itself spectacularly, tightly bound to the Palace. At the summit stands Mohammed VI—political and economic pivot, largest landowner, leading economic operator, at the head of a sprawling empire.

The regime’s stability rests neither on popular consensus nor on mystical legitimacy, but on an efficient repressive apparatus and the monarchy’s full integration into the interests of international capital. The Makhzen controls the state, neutralizes political parties, tames unions, and crushes periodic uprisings.

From the February 20 Movement in 2011 to Gen Z 212, via the Hirak of the Rif and Jerada, protest repeatedly resurfaces—driven by the same causes: humiliation, poverty, and injustice. The Islamist PJD served as a safety valve before being discredited. Aziz Akhannouch now plays the role of the expendable fuse. The system itself remains untouched.

Facing the monarchy, the political void is glaring. Parties are rejected, the institutional left discredited, Islamists waiting in ambush. Nothing within the current framework answers popular aspirations. Behind the façade of stadiums and grand projects, anger continues to smolder.

The suffocated revolt is not an end. It is a warning.
