The Rif Cause Gains Momentum in Spain: From Local Struggle to Transnational Advocacy

Algiers, Algeria | The Rif cause, long silenced within Morocco’s borders through repression, surveillance, and criminalization, is finding renewed oxygen in the diaspora. This weekend, the city of Girona hosted a series of meetings and public gatherings organized by activists from the Rif community abroad, drawing a remarkable turnout of Rifians determined to transform exile into a platform of resistance.
A Struggle That Refuses Confinement
“The battle for the liberation of the Rif is no longer confined to the interior; it is an open struggle that transcends borders,” declared Rif activist Ali Arras, whose words reverberated among attendees. He also stressed that “organization and unity around the cause are a historic duty that does not tolerate neutrality.”
Arras’s intervention set the tone for the gatherings, framing the Rif struggle as a transnational movement that refuses confinement and continues to adapt despite state repression.
Arras further underscored that international engagement remains indispensable for advancing the Rif question beyond the confines of Morocco’s internal political narrative. He stressed that the support expressed by various circles of Spanish civil and political society should be understood not as symbolic gestures, but as critical bridges to internationalize the Rif cause, dismantle the isolation imposed by the Makhzen, and affirm it as a legitimate question of human rights and self-determination.
Systematic Erosion of Rif Society
Participants also warned of the systematic deployment of narcotics and smuggling networks in the Rif, describing them as deliberate tools of statecraft meant to erode social cohesion, numb political consciousness, and sabotage emancipatory momentum. As one activist put it, “The Rif is paying a heavy price—arrests, repression, and the generalized spread of drugs as an instrument to destroy youth awareness.”
This framing situates narcotics not as a random social ill, but as a weaponized policy—a calculated attempt to weaken the region from within, ensuring that repression is reinforced by engineered decay.
The gatherings further paid homage to political prisoners and martyrs, whose sacrifices were described not as mere memories but as a renewed pact of resistance. For many, recalling figures such as Ali Arras and others symbolizes a continued commitment to dignity and justice.
The Girona mobilizations make clear that the Rif cause is entering a new phase: one where diaspora activism converges with international solidarity networks, directly challenging the Moroccan state’s narrative monopoly.
The Rif struggle is no longer geographically contained—it is a transnational front, where the voices of exiled communities amplify the silenced cries from Al Hoceima, Nador, and beyond.
