Exposing the Zionist Occupation’s Systematic Campaign of Torture Against One of Palestine’s Most Resilient Heroes
Algiers, Algeria | May 5th, 2025 — Abdullah Barghouti, a name that strikes fear in the heart of the Zionist occupation and inspires unwavering admiration among Palestinians, is currently enduring a horrific form of slow death in the notorious Gilboa prison. Barghouti, also known as “Amir al-Zil,” the “Shadow Prince,” has been subjected to a cruel and systematic campaign of torture that not only violates his basic human rights but also stands as a grave testament to the inhumanity of the Zionist occupation’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners.
Barghouti, a leader of Hamas’ military wing and one of the most feared figures in the struggle against the Zionist occupation, is enduring unimaginable suffering behind bars. Recently, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office issued an urgent call, warning the world of the intense and violent abuse Barghouti is facing inside Gilboa prison. The details of this abuse are staggering:
Barghouti’s body is covered in bruises, with blood clots on his head, swollen eyes, and broken ribs. His health has deteriorated to the point where sleep has become impossible. His torturers have resorted to sickening methods, including repeated beatings, forcing him to endure the sight of hungry attack dogs being unleashed on his bloodied body, with one guard even gleefully instructing: “Let the dogs have fun with him.” After each round of brutalization, boiling liquid soap is poured over his frail form, leaving him in excruciating pain.
This is not a mere prison sentence; it is a deliberate and calculated attempt to break his spirit, to erase his legacy. Yet, Abdullah Barghouti’s courage remains unshaken. Despite being shackled and confined to a small, unsanitary cell, the “Shadow Prince” continues to defy his captors. The emotional and physical toll this systematic torture has taken on him is incomprehensible. His body is a battleground, but his spirit is unyielding.
The torturers have pushed him into recurring comas, with Barghouti, weakened by his unimaginable ordeal, attempting to sleep sitting up, his head permanently hunched forward in agony. The absence of any kind of protection or basic dignity means that he wraps his hand in trash bags and toilet paper to shield himself from further harm. He has been deprived of the most basic human needs, including a proper bath for over twelve days, surviving on water-soaked bread because his jaw is too broken to chew.
The Zionist occupation holds full responsibility for this slow, intentional execution. This is not an isolated incident but a reflection of the wider strategy employed by the Zionist military to demonize and dehumanize Palestinian prisoners. The deliberate neglect of international human rights standards and the cruelty inflicted upon Barghouti, whose life is now hanging by a thread, demands urgent international intervention.
Abdullah Barghouti’s imprisonment and torture have sparked global outrage, especially considering his unparalleled bravery in the Palestinian resistance. With 67 life sentences handed down to him, Barghouti has become a symbol of resilience, having orchestrated numerous operations targeting Zionist military and civilian personnel. One of his most prominent operations, the Hebrew University attack, resulted in the deaths of 35 Zionist settlers and the injury of 370 others.
He has been incarcerated for over 20 years, yet his name remains at the forefront of Palestinian resistance. His efforts during the infamous Shalit exchange deal negotiations, where his release was a key demand from Hamas, have earned him reverence across the Arab world. However, his presence in Zionist prisons is a constant reminder of the occupation’s brutal tactics.
The international community cannot stand idly by as Barghouti’s life is taken piece by piece. The torture he endures is not just a personal tragedy but a violation of international law, calling for an immediate response from humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross and a call for a global investigation into Zionist practices.
