Algiers – November 2025 – The second Beekeeping and Small-Livestock Fair opened on Wednesday at the OMS Saïd Tazrout hall in the new town of Tizi Ouzou, bringing together producers, cooperatives and institutional actors for a concentrated four-day programme (26–29 November 2025) that underlines the wilaya’s ambition to elevate small-scale husbandry and apiculture into engines of local development and food security.
Organised jointly by the Tizi Ouzou People’s Provincial Assembly (APW) and the Tizi Ouzou Beekeeping Cooperative (CAPTO), in close cooperation with the Chamber of Agriculture and the Wilaya’s Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA), the fair presents a markedly expanded footprint compared with its inaugural edition. With 120 exhibitors — roughly forty of them specialist companies active in the fair’s core domains, and thirty more participants than at the first edition — the event draws delegations and commercial participants from seventeen wilayas across Algeria, including Tlemcen, Tipasa, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Oran, Sétif, Boumerdès and Algiers.
Placed under the slogan “the agricultural producer, guarantor of our plate,” the fair is organised around two complementary axes, as explained by Ramdane Ladaouri, president of CAPTO. The first axis is transactional and public-facing: farm-to-sit exchanges where producers sell primary and processed goods — honey, cheeses, soaps and related products — directly to consumers. The second axis is strictly business-to-business: an arena for specialist companies to exchange technical know-how, build partnerships and engage with institutional financiers and support bodies to scale production and improve market access.
The opening ceremony, presided over by Sid Ali Youcef, president of the APW — accompanied by DRAG Fethi Bousbaa, the wali’s representative — emphasised the strategic dimension of agrarian accompaniment. “Supporting farmers is a strategic pillar of our assembly’s programme,” Youcef declared, framing the fair as a deliberate policy instrument to promote and valorise local potential in apiculture and small livestock. He underlined the fair’s role as a forum for the exchange of practical expertise among participants from across the country and as an opportunity to expose regional know-how to a broad public.
Technical and economic realities were addressed in clear terms by the wilaya’s agricultural authorities. Nabil Boussa, head of service at the DSA, highlighted the fair’s concrete developmental contribution. He stressed that beekeeping and small livestock represent essential sources of livelihood for many households, notably as subsistence activities that can be upgraded through targeted support and market access. Boussa also flagged the sector’s vulnerabilities: he reported significant losses this year among certain rabbit breeders (cuniculteurs) hit by a viral outbreak that decimated stocks in some areas.
The statistical portrait of Tizi Ouzou’s apicultural sector, presented during the event, is striking and positions the wilaya as a national leader. The DSA figures show 7,605 registered beekeepers in the wilaya. The small-livestock registry counts nearly 1,300 poultry farmers alongside a smaller number of cuniculteurs. Productive performance is impressive: beekeepers in Tizi Ouzou produced more than 2,108 quintaux of honey from 137,793 colonies residing in 120,844 hives — an average yield exceeding 3 kilograms per hive — and generated over 70,000 swarms, making the wilaya a leading supplier of colonies destined for apiarists nationwide.
Participation by women at the fair is notable and growing. Hamid Saïdani, president of the Chamber of Agriculture, reported that 35 women are exhibiting with their own stands, and that the chamber registers over 700 beekeepers within its ranks. Saïdani welcomed the event as a visibility platform that permits producers to benefit from interregional exchanges and to capitalise on proven practices from other parts of the country.
Institutional backing has been tangible. The National Agency for Microcredit Support and Employment (ANGEM) in Tizi Ouzou, together with financial institutions and insurance partners present at the fair, has supported numerous agricultural projects since the start of 2025. ANGEM’s contribution to small-livestock projects in the wilaya totals one million Algerian dinars, a sign of public financing instruments aligning with grassroots entrepreneurship.
For CAPTO’s leadership, the fair is not an end but a means. Ramdane Ladaouri expressed the cooperative’s aspiration to elevate the event’s national profile, to consolidate it as a recurring economic platform and to leverage it as a springboard for sustained sectoral development. The organisers envisage broader market linkages, enhanced technical assistance and stronger finance-industry interfaces that will allow beekeepers and small-stock farmers to convert traditional practices into resilient, revenue-generating enterprises.
