Algiers, Algeria | June 29th, 2025 — Tosyali Algeria, one of the nation’s leading heavy industry powerhouses, has officially raised the bar in its export ambitions, announcing a targeted sales volume of 2 million tonnes of steel and iron products abroad in 2025, expected to generate $1 billion in revenues. This announcement marks a significant milestone in the group’s trajectory as it positions itself as a regional export hub and an integral pillar of Algeria’s economic diversification policy.

The bold figures were revealed during Tosyali’s participation in the 2025 Algiers International Fair, with company officials highlighting that June alone yielded nearly $100 million in export revenue, largely fueled by the full-scale operation of its new flat steel production unit, launched in October 2024.

From Local Saturation to Global Ambition

Having fulfilled a substantial portion of national demand—particularly in construction-grade steel and flat steel—Tosyali is now setting its sights on expanding its global footprint. With a sharpened focus on Mediterranean and European markets, the company is aggressively pursuing opportunities previously hindered by high domestic consumption and complex import regulations in the EU during 2022.

Unfair Competition Triggers Calls for Support

During a visit by Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion Kamel Rezig to the Tosyali pavilion, company representatives expressed concern over what they described as unfair competition from two unnamed countries flooding the Algerian market with steel imports. They urged the government to implement safeguard measures to protect local industry and to provide strategic backing to facilitate access to the EU market for Algerian products.

Official Response: Balance and Strategy

In response, Minister Rezig reiterated the state’s commitment to fostering a robust export environment while maintaining the delicate balance of securing the local market. He emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among major steel producers to avoid shortages and ensure market stability. Rezig concluded his visit with a challenge: “Let’s meet on December 31 to see whether the $1 billion target has been met.”

Integrated Industrial Vision and Expanding Capacity

Tosyali’s meteoric rise is underpinned by a strategic Algerian-Turkish partnership. With 17 production units, over 2,200 employees (soon to exceed 2,700 with the commissioning of its cold rolling mill), and a current capacity of 6 million tonnes per year, Tosyali aims to reach 8 million tonnes annually by 2026.

The company has ramped up exports to Italy, Spain, Turkey, and signed new agreements with Tunisia, South Africa, and other European markets. The ultimate goal is to double export value to $2 billion annually by 2026, solidifying Algeria’s footprint in the global steel supply chain.

Local Resources, Global Impact

In a strategic move to reduce import dependency and enhance sustainability, Tosyali is preparing to launch a new iron ore processing unit to utilize raw material from the Gara Djebilet mine in Béchar province. With an initial capacity of 1.6 million tonnes annually, this development will provide a steady, local feedstock to the Oran steel complex and help insulate production from global commodity price volatility.
